LA GRANDE, Ore. – The Corban University women's basketball team escaped Quinn Coliseum with an 82-80 victory over Eastern Oregon University Friday.
The Warriors (16-10) (11-5) completed a regular season sweep over EOU. Corban had lost the previous seven matches against the Mountaineers entering this season. Corban was led by Katie Steigleman's 23 points on 7 of 12 shooting from the field. Jennesa Miller added 18 points, and Tess Bennett and Emily Tsugawa each scored 12 points.
Becky Buhler grabbed a team-high nine rebounds for the Warriors, who finished with a 36 to 34 rebounding advantage over EOU. Bennett threw five of Corban's 25 assists. The Warriors shot an astounding 57 percent from the field, a season-high for an opponent against Eastern this season. Corban hit 7 of its 14 three-point attempts.
Eastern Oregon led by as many as four points in the first half, 8-4, early in the game. A Bennett jumper in the paint gave the Warriors their largest lead of the first half at the 8:56 mark, 25-17. The first half featured six lead changes and four ties.
Corban spread a 41-37 halftime lead to a 46-37 lead just into the second half after a basket from Miller. The Warriors would get their largest lead of the night after another Miller bucket at the 16:33 mark of the second half, 52-42. EOU crept back into the game tying the score at 73 after a pair of
Kyle Miller free throws with 3:12 left in regulation.
Seconds later,
Samantha Flett would then give Eastern its first lead of the second half with two more free throws, 75-73. Corban responded with an 8-2 run to take the lead back by four with 40 seconds left. Flett then hit a three-pointer with 22 seconds left to cut the lead to one. The Mountaineers would steal a pass on the ensuing Warriors' possession, but miss a pair of free throws with seven seconds left.
Miller led three Mountaineer double-digit scorers with 19 points. The junior finished 7 for 15 from the field, including 3 of 5 from behind the arc. Flett scored 18 points, grabbed seven rebounds, and threw five assists.
Rosebud Guthrie added 17 points and seven rebounds. Eastern Oregon was 44 percent from the field, shot 7 of 20 from behind the perimeter, and 13 for 20 from the free-throw line.
The Mountaineers will end their regular season home schedule Saturday against Northwest Christian at 5:30 p.m. Flett,
Alyssa Garro, and
Shaylee Nielsen will all be honored on Senior Night. The Beacons won the matchup earlier this season in Eugene, 66-61. NCU (10-16) (6-10) fell at The College of Idaho Friday, 67-44.
