PORTLAND, Ore. – The Warner Pacific College women's basketball team rallied for a 87-74 win over Eastern Oregon University Friday.
The Knights (12-9) (6-5) improved to 8-2 at home this season, and completed a regular season sweep over Eastern Oregon with the victory. WPC shot a phenomenal 58 percent from the field, hitting 31 of its 53 shots. The Mountaineers had their best shooting output during conference play hitting 49 percent of their attempts from the field.
The Mountaineers had an early 27-16 advantage with 7:31 to play in the first half. WPC fought back and cut the Eastern lead to six, but
Kelsea Hurliman drained a long three pointer at the halftime buzzer that pushed the EOU lead back to nine and gave the Mounties momentum at the break, 40-31.
Warner Pacific regrouped over intermission and responded by hitting their first seven shots to begin the second period. The Knights grabbed their first lead of the game at the 15:03 mark on two Cameryn Calhoun free throws, then battled EOU through nine lead changes and five ties over the next six minutes of play.
A steal and layup from Jessica Denmon gave WPC the lead for good with 9:06 left in regulation. Warner Pacific's advantage reached as many as 18 points and steady free throw shooting sealed the victory.
Warner Pacific finished with five double digit scorers led by Miranda Holenstein's game-high 23 points. She converted on 9 of her 14 attempts from the field. Kelsey Mattsen added 18 points, Katie Smith had 13 points and Layne Tucker chipped in 12 points. Calhoun finished with a double-double with 11 points and 11 assists.
The Knights finished with 22 assists as a team, while Eastern had 17. WPC outrebounded the Mountaineers, 33-22. Warner Pacific finished with 17 turnovers and EOU committed 16. Eastern Oregon made eight of its 17 three-point attempts and the Knights hit three of eight. Warner Pacific hit 16 of 16 free throw attempts in the second half and 22 of 24 for the game.
Hurliman scored 21 points to lead EOU (13-8) (5-7), while
Rosebud Guthrie and
Vintea Georges added 15 and 14 points respectively.
The Mountaineers stay in Portland and face Concordia University (16-7) (8-3) Saturday in a 7:30 p.m. scheduled matchup. The Cavaliers beat The College of Idaho Friday, 68-58. CU held off an Eastern rally on Dec. 30 in La Grande earlier this season, 93-90. There will be a live video stream and live stats on EOUSports from Saturday's game.
