Warner Pacific Storms Past Eastern Men

BOX SCORE

PORTLAND, Ore. – The Warner Pacific College men's basketball team overwhelmed No. 12 Eastern Oregon University Friday, 87-67.

The Knights (14-7) (7-4) won their conference-leading sixth straight game and avenged their last loss an 88-80 loss at EOU on Dec. 31 earlier this season. Warner Pacific outscored Eastern 34-14 in the paint and outrebounded the Mountaineers, 46-33.

Jamar Johnson got Eastern started early by hitting a pair of shots from distance, and the Mountaineers opened up a 14-11 lead. An 8-0 run from WPC put the Knights in the lead 19-14 with 10:40 on the clock, but it was short lived as EOU retook the lead 28-27 just three minutes later. The rest of the period was back and forth as the lead changed hands eight times before Warner Pacific closed the half with a 10-3 burst to take a 45-37 lead into the break.

The second half belonged to the Knights, as their lead never dipped below eight points. A bucket from Traevone Bowie at the 11:37 mark gave WPC their largest lead up to that point, 65-54. EOU made a run of eight straight points over the next minute capped by a Thomas McCarthy trey to cut the margin to 64-53, but Josh Black responded with three point goals on three straight possessions to push the advantage back out to 73-53 and the Knights cruised from there.

Webster Moreland scored a game-high 27 points to lead Warner Pacific. The senior was 10 of 15 from the field, added 10 rebounds, and grabbed four steals. Black finished with 15 points, Bowie scored 14 points, and Biniam Tadele chipped in 10 points. The Knights made 12 steals in the victory.

Warner Pacific shot 49 percent from the field, and held the Mountaineers to 35 percent. EOU made just 28 percent of its attempts from the field in the second half. The Knights were 11 of 25 from behind the perimeter, and Eastern was 10 of 33 from three-point range. The Mountaineers did have a 15 of 17 from the free throw line advantage over WPC's 12 of 22 from the charity stripe.

McCarthy led Eastern Oregon (16-5) (8-4) with 15 points. The senior was 5 of 10 from behind the arc. Johnson finished 11 points. Anthony Brown had a team-high seven rebounds, and Cody Thurmond had four assists.

The Mountaineers stay in the Rose City Saturday for a meeting with Concordia University. The Cavaliers (8-14) (2-9) stunned The College of Idaho Friday, 103-64. Eastern knocked off CU in La Grande earlier this season on Dec. 30, 96-75. Saturday's game at Concordia will have live video and stats on EOUSports.com.
