SALEM, Ore. – The Corban University women's basketball team handed Eastern Oregon University its fifth straight loss Saturday, 75-64.
The Warriors (11-8) (6-3) were led by Tess Bennett's 22 points. The sophomore was 8 for 13 from the field. Bennett had 22 points on 8 of 13 shooting from the field the last time EOU played at Corban last season, but Eastern won in that matchup. The Mountaineers had won the previous seven meetings against Corban.
Katie Steigleman added 16 points for the Warriors. Jenessa Miller recorded a double double with 15 points and 14 rebounds. She also tossed five assists. Corban shot 43 percent from the field, and made 3 of its 10 three-point attempts. The Warriors were 14 of 18 from the free throw line.
Corban had a 34-18 advantage on points in the paint. The Warriors had a 49-37 rebound advantage over EOU as well. Eastern had 15 assists to Corban's 18. Each team committed 13 turnovers.
Four Mountaineers finished in double figures
Samantha Flett and
Shaylee Nielsen each had 11 points.
Kelsea Hurliman and
Rosebud Guthrie each scored 10 points. Guthrie grabbed seven rebounds and had five blocks. Flett threw a team-high three assists. The EOU bench outscored the Warriors' bench, 18-5.
Saturday's game featured five lead changes. Eastern jumped out to an 8-0 lead to open the game. Corban did not get on the score board until the 17:14 mark via a free throw by Bennett. Over the next nine-plus minutes, the host Warriors used a 17-9 run en route to grabbing a slim two-point lead (18-16) after a Miller three-point play with 8:03 on the clock. Eastern Oregon would close out the half on a 17-8 run and took a 33-26 lead into the locker room despite Bennett closing out the scoring with a jumper.
The opening nine-plus minutes of the second half would belong to Corban, as the host Warriors used a 24-16 run to grab its first lead (50-49) since the aforementioned three-point play by Miller just prior to the final media timeout of the opening half. Eastern Oregon would battle back to tie the game at 52-all with 7:56 remaining after a
Nicole Redd three-pointer, but Corban hung tough over the final seven-plus minutes building its lead to the final margin of 11 points (75-64) with near perfect free throw shooting (9-for-10) in the second half.
The Mountaineers begin the second half of Cascade Collegiate Conference play Friday, Jan. 21; in La Grande against Oregon Tech. EOU beat the Lady Owls on Dec. 18 in Klamath Falls, 85-68. It will be White Out Night in Quinn Coliseum and every fan wearing a white shirt will receive a giveaway. The game tips off at 5:30 p.m.
