Mountaineers Slide Past Northwest Christian

EUGENE, Ore. – The No. 12 Eastern Oregon University men's basketball team edged Northwest Christian University on the road Friday, 67-63.

The Mountaineers (14-3) (6-2) were led by Anthony Brown's first double-double at EOU. The sophomore finished with 12 points and 10 rebounds. The Spokane, Wash. native added a game-high five steals. All those numbers were season highs.

Jamar Johnson also had 12 points for the Mountaineers. Jeff Ranstrom and Travares Peterson each chipped in 11 points. Peterson finished with a game-high seven assists. EOU entered the game leading the Cascade Collegiate Conference in assists per game with an average of 17 per outing. Friday Eastern threw 16 compared to NCU's 15.

Last season, EOU won in Eugene with a free throw after time expired, 66-65. Friday's game was much of the same. A lay-up from Kyllian Wood with 2:54 left in the first half gave the Mountaineers' their largest lead in the first half, 33-23. Eastern led 37-30 at halftime. Brown made a lay-up with 9:37 left in regulation to give EOU a 52-42 advantage.

A Kellen Spicer three-pointer at the 5:48 mark of the second capped a 17-6 Beacon run to take the lead, 59-58. NCU held the lead until Jeff Ranstom tied the game after he completed a three-point play at the free throw line with 1:38 left in the game. EOU took the lead with a Brown jumper with 34 seconds left and would not surrender the lead.

Eastern Oregon outrebounded Northwest Christian, 39-37, and forced 17 Beacon turnovers. EOU finished with 11 turnovers. The Mountaineers came into the game second in NAIA Div. 2 in three-pointers made per game and seventh in three-point field goal percentage. NCU held Eastern to 2 of 14 shooting from behind the perimeter Friday.

The Beacons made 11 of their 24 three-pointers, a season-high for an opponent against EOU in 2010-11. Before the game, the Mountaineers were second in the CCC in three-point field goal percentage defense holding opponents to 29 percent shooting from behind the arc.

Kellen Spicer scored a game-high 15 points for Northwest Christian. Cameron Marshall and Brian Hampton each had 13 points. Brent McKee added a double-double 10 points and 11 rebounds. Hampton finished with four assists and four steals.

The Beacons (7-13) (1-7) shot 42 percent from the field in the game, while Eastern shot 42 percent as well. Both teams also shot 57 percent from the free throw line. There were three lead changes and four ties in the game.

Saturday, the Mountaineers travel to Salem, Ore. to play at Corban University (13-7) (3-5). Last season the Warriors upset then-ranked No. 13 Eastern Oregon in Salem, 75-73. Friday, Corban ended College of Idaho's four-game win streak with a 62-59 victory in Salem. There will be live video and live stats from the game on EOUSports.com.

- The Mountaineers have still not lost consecutive games under Isaac Williams.
- Eastern Oregon last lost two games in a row on Jan. 6, 2009.
