The Eastern Oregon University women will tip-off in its fifth NAIA Div. 2 National Tournament in the past seven years, Wednesday night at 7:15 Pacific Time.
The Mountaineers (20-11) face the last team they played in Sioux City, Iowa, Black Hills State University. The Yellow Jackets ended Eastern's 2007-08 season with a 63-48 victory in the Tyson Events Center on March 14, 2008.
Salena Leavitt and
Alyssa Garro are the only current EOU players that played in that game. Five BHSU (25-6) players on this year's roster got playing time in that game. The Yellow Jackets enter the tournament as the country's fifth-ranked team, and winners of 14 of their last 15 games.
Black Hills is coming off its best trip to the national tournament after a quarterfinal finish in last year's outing. BHSU is 10-6 all-time at the national tournament. EOU is 1-4, but picked up its first victory in it last trip with an opening round upset over Cardinal Stritch. The Mountaineers were a seven-seed and Cardinal Stritch was a two-seed. This season Eastern enters as a seven-seed paired up against a two-seed.
BHSU has amassed a 79-20 record over the past three seasons. This year the Yellow Jackets come to Sioux City after falling in the Dakota Athletic Conference Championship game to Jamestown State, 65-64.
Katelynn Lamb is fifth in the DAC averaging 14.3 points per game. The 5-9 guard scored a season best 23 points against Mount Mercy on Nov. 28. Tiffany Thomas' 2.68 steals per game is second in the conference.
Brittany Fuhrman is 11th in the country in three-pointers made (93), and 12th in three-point field goal percentage (.437). Alana Dykhouse leads the Yellow Jackets with a 5.35 rebounds per game average, and Janna Schriber averages a team-high 2.71 assists per game.
Black Hills State leads the league in scoring offense, averaging 73.6 points per game. The Yellow Jackets are third in the DAC in scoring defense, giving up an average of 61.5 points per game. BHSU shoots a conference-best .436 from the field, but allows an average of .416.
Lamb and Fuhrman have both been two-time DAC first-team performers, and Lamb was honorable mention All-American last season.
Wednesday's game tips off at 9:15 p.m. Central Time, and will be the final game of the first day. A live viewing party will be available for fans on the EOU campus in the Quinn Building in Room 127.
