LA GRANDE, Ore. – The No. 15 Concordia University women's basketball team held off an incredible rally by No. 20 Eastern Oregon University Thursday for a 93-90 win.
The Cavaliers (12-4) (4-0) took an 84-66 lead after a Rachel Scarpelli jump-shot with 6:20 remaining in regulation. EOU slowly cut into Concordia's largest lead of the game over the next six minutes. A
Kyle Miller free throw with 45 seconds left cut the lead to 90-87. The Mountaineers missed a three-pointer to tie with two seconds left in the game.
Eastern entered the game with the top three-point percentage in NAIA Div. 2, 44 percent from behind the arc, but Thursday the Mountaineers were 25 percent. EOU made 8 of its 31 three-point attempts. Concordia made 11 of its 23 shots from three-point range and finished 47 percent from behind the perimeter. Eastern Oregon was No. 2 in the nation in three-point percentage defense holding opponents to 22 percent shooting before the game.
The Cavaliers remained the only unbeaten team in Cascade Collegiate Conference play behind three scorers that finished with at least 20 points. Danielle Clauson, the leading scorer in the CCC, matched her average with 22 points in the win. Courtney May added 21 points and Scarpelli finished with 20 points. The trio was 23 of 41 from the field and 8 of 17 from three-point range. Sarah Eischen had 10 rebounds and May finished with eight assists.
Concordia became the first team to shoot 50 percent from the field against EOU (11-3) (3-2) this season. The Mountaineers were 45 percent from the field. Miller had the fourth 20-point game of her career, and scored in double figures for the 36th time, with 20 points.
Shaylee Nielsen scored 20 points and made five three-pointers.
Samantha Flett added 18 points, and
Rosebud Guthrie had 11 points. Flett and
Kelsea Hurliman each grabbed seven rebounds, and Miller and Hurliman each threw four assists.
The Cavaliers finished with 19 assists, while Eastern Oregon had 17. Concordia committed 16 turnovers to EOU's 14. It was the 12th time this season an opponent has thrown more turnovers than the Mountaineers. CU led at halftime 56-47, and Eastern is now 0-3 this season when it trails at halftime. EOU outrebounded Concordia, 46-37. It was the first loss of the season when Eastern Oregon outrebounds its opponent (7-1).
The Mountaineers welcome Warner Pacific College (6-7) (1-3) Friday to Quinn Coliseum. The Knights fell at The College of Idaho Thursday, 63-49. - Concordia's 93 points were the most Eastern Oregon has allowed since the 2003-04 season when Montana Western beat EOU, 100-78.
