Nielsen and EOU Rain Threes on Oregon Tech

KLAMATH FALLS, Ore. – The No. 20 Eastern Oregon University women's basketball team used a barrage of three-pointers to beat Oregon Tech Saturday, 85-68.

The Mountaineers (11-2) (3-1) victory sets up an intriguing matchup in La Grande on Dec. 30 against No. 15 Concordia University. It will be both teams next conference game and feature the top two teams in the CCC at this point of the season.

Shaylee Nielsen led all scorers with a career-high 22 points. The senior was 7 for 12 from the field, including 7 of 11 from behind the arc. Kyle Miller and Vintea Georges added 17 and 13 points for Eastern. Miller and Rosebud Guthrie grabbed six rebounds, and Miller threw six assists.

A Crissy Watts three-pointer at the 13:06 mark of the first half gave OIT its largest lead of the game, 14-7. Eastern slowly chipped into the lead and tied the game at 24 with 8:26 left in the half. Eastern continued its run and led 38-31 at halftime. EOU would open the second half on an 18-4 run over the first six minutes. The 56-35 lead would be the largest in the game. Tech would come as close as 64-54 with 9:30 left in regulation.

Tech outrebounded Eastern, 44-42, but it was EOU that outshot the Owls, 47 percent to 35 percent. The Mountaineers made 14 of their 31 three-point attempts for 45 percent, while Oregon Tech was 9 of 23 for 39 percent from behind the perimeter.

Morgan Hofman led OIT(8-8) (0-4) with 18 points, and Aundrea Albright and Kiana Caban each added 11 points. Brittany Cherry grabbed a game-high nine rebounds. Hofman also had six assists.

The Mountaineers matched a season-high 26 assists in the win. EOU entered the game sixth in the nation in assists per game with an average of 18.3 per game. Tech finished with 15.

Eastern and Concordia (11-3) (3-0) will tipoff in Quinn Coliseum on Friday, Dec. 30 at 7:30 p.m. The Cavaliers began the season 0-3 but have reeled off 11 straight wins.

EASTERN OREGON – OREGON TECH POSTGAME NOTES

- The Mountaineers have won eight of the last nine against OIT.
- Eastern leads the all-time series over the Owls, 29-12.
- The EOU win avenged a 75-62 setback last season in Klamath Falls.
- Eastern Oregon has given up 68, 69, 69, and now 68 points in its four CCC games.
- The Mountaineers are 11-0 when leading at halftime and 0-2 when trailing.
- No opponent this season has shot 50 percent or better from the field versus EOU.
- Nielsen's 11 three-point attempts were the most since Alyssa Garro shot 12 last season against College of Idaho on Feb. 17, 2009.
- The 14 team made three pointers marks the seventh time EOU has made double digit amount of threes this season.
