2010 Quinn Classic: Day Two Recap


LA GRANDE, Ore. – Cascade Collegiate Conference members, Eastern Oregon University and The College of Idaho, each finished 2-0 at the Aramark Quinn Classic Saturday.

The No. 18 Mountaineers (4-0) were led by Jamar Johnson and Travares Peterson, who each finished with 18 points. The pair combined for 15 for 23 shooting from the field. Johnson was 4 for 4 from behind the perimeter and Peterson added nine rebounds. Thomas McCarthy finished with 17 points on 5 for 8 shooting from behind the arc. Cody Thurmond finished with a game-high six assists.

Eastern ended the game with 25 assists, and finished the tournament with 49 assists in two games. EOU outrebounded Walla Walla, 45-29, and had 17 offensive rebounds. The Mountaineers committed 14 turnovers and forced 20 Wolves' turnovers. Eastern Oregon finished 12 of 27 for three-pointers and shot 49 percent from the field. WWU was 5 of 22 from the behind the arc and shot 35 percent from the field.

With the score 12-8 with 11:01 left in the first half, McCarthy made the first three-pointer of the game. Prior to that, both teams were 0 for 8 from behind the perimeter. However, the basket marked the turning point of the game. EOU went on a 20-6 run that included five straight three-pointers, a slam dunk, and another three-pointer.

Eastern Oregon led by as many as 18 points in the first half, and stretched the lead to 46 points twice in the second half.

Walla Walla (0-2) was led by Josh Henderson's 16 points off of the bench. He went 4 for 7 for three-pointers. Tristan Greenidge led the Wolves with seven rebounds. He added nine points.

In Game 3 of the Quinn Classic, Kelly McCarty led The College of Idaho with 26 points as the Yotes beat Montana Tech, 80-56. Krispin Banks had a team-high six rebounds and Miguel Rodriguez had a game-high seven assists.

Tanner Neumann scored a team-high 15 points to lead the OreDiggers. Kellen Hasquet had a game-high seven rebounds, and AJ Paine had five assists.

The College of Idaho shot 63 percent from the field, including 61 percent from behind the arc. C of I also outrebounded Tech 32 to 23.

Eastern Oregon's Jason Mumm was named Tournament MVP. The junior finished with 24 points and 20 rebounds in the pair of games. Mumm shot 11 of 19 from the field in the classic. McCarthy made All-Tournament team after finishing with a tournament high 38 points and 10 of 20 shooting from three-point range. Greenidge, McCarty, and Tech's Dirk Anderson rounded out the All-Tournament team.

The Mountaineers travel to Moscow, Idaho and an exhibition game against NCAA Div. 1 opponent, University of Idaho, next Saturday night. EOU faces Walla Walla University again for its next regular season game in College Place, Wash. Eastern improved to 56-4 in the last 60 games inside Quinn Coliseum, and won't have another home contest until Dec. 3 against The Evergreen State College in the Cascade Conference opener.
