Saints Stifle Eastern Oregon Men

HELENA, Mont. – The Eastern Oregon University men's basketball team fell at Carroll College Saturday, 84-78.

Jamar Johnson scored a season-high 26 points to lead the No. 18 Mountaineers (6-1). EOU fell for the first time this season, one win shy of matching the best start in school history. Johnson was 7 of 12 from the field and 5 of 7 from behind the perimeter.

Thomas McCarthy, Jason Mumm, and Travares Peterson all finished scoring in double digits and each had six rebounds. McCarthy was 6 of 13 from the field and 3 of 10 behind the arc with 15 points and four assists. Mumm had 11 points and Peterson added 10 points. Josh Cottle had a game-high five steals.

Eastern led by as many an eight points in the first half, trailed 36-35 at halftime, and fell behind by 10 in the second half. The Mountaineers cut the lead to two points with only a minute left before the Saints spread the lead to its final margin. Carroll completed the sweep of its own tournament, the Carroll College Classic. The Saints (5-2) began the season 3-0, including a victory over NCAA Div. 1 Idaho State University, before dropping a pair of games to NCAA Div. 1 opponents by a combined 10 points.

Carroll finished with four double-digit scorers led by Chase Godecke's 21 points on 7 of 12 shooting from the field. He added a game-high 15 rebounds. Sam Catmell scored 20 points, hitting 5 of his 8 three-point attempts. Tony Dalton and Andy Garland added 13 and 10 points. Jordan Reyes threw a team-high four assists.

Eastern was 42 percent from the field and behind the perimeter in the game, while the Saints were 47 percent from the field and 33 percent from three-point range. Carroll outrebounded EOU, 36-31.

The Mountaineers will have off for Thanksgiving before returning to action Nov. 26 for the Vineyard Inn Classic in Walla Walla, Wash. EOU will play the host, Whitman College on Nov. 26 at 8 p.m. Eastern plays Pacific Lutheran University the following night at 6 p.m. Both opponents are members of the Northwest Conference in NCAA Div. 3.
