Eastern Oregon Men Tame Wolves

COLLEGE PLACE, Wash. – The No. 18 Eastern Oregon University men's basketball team knocked off Walla Walla University on the road Wednesday, 65-50.

The Mountaineers (5-0) held off a feisty WWU team behind three double-digit scorers. Jamar Johnson led EOU with 16 points on 7 of 12 shooting from the field. Thomas McCarthy and Jeff Ranstrom each finished with double-doubles. Ranstrom had 13 points and 10 rebounds and McCarthy added 12 points and 10 rebounds.

Eastern shot 39 percent from the field, including 5 of 22 from behind the perimeter. EOU also finished 10 of 17 from the free throw line. The Mountaineers turned the ball over 23 times compared to WWU's 18 turnovers. Eastern Oregon finished with a season-low 12 assists, while Walla Walla had eight assists.

The Mountaineers outrebounded the Wolves, 45-28. EOU outscored Walla Walla 19-5 in points off of turnovers and 26-9 in points off of the bench.

The Wolves shot 28 percent from the field and made 6 of its 21 three-point attempts. Tristan Greenidge had a game-high 18 points on 6 of 14 shooting from the field.

In the second meeting between the schools this season, EOU had a little more trouble with Walla Walla than the 85-44 win in La Grande on Nov. 6. The teams will meet again on Feb. 2, 2011, in La Grande. It was the 25th all-time meeting between the schools, and the Mountaineers have now won 22 of the games.

Eastern Oregon travels to Helena, Mont., for the Carroll College Classic. The Mountaineers play Rocky Mountain College Friday at 5:30 p.m. MT.
