Mountaineers Battle in Exhibition Games

MOSCOW, Idaho – The Eastern Oregon University women's and men's basketball fell in a pair of exhibitions at the University of Idaho Saturday.

The Mountaineer women (2-0) dropped a 72-55 outcome to the NCAA Div. 1 Vandals. Kelsea Hurliman led EOU with 11 points on 4 for 5 shooting from the field, including 3 for 4 from behind the perimeter. Eastern shot 32 percent from the field and made seven three-pointers.

Yinka Olorunnife and Ashley Walters scored 13 and 12 points to lead Idaho (1-0). The game counted as a regular season game for the Vandals. Idaho shot 40 percent from the field and 37 percent from three-point range.

The Mountaineer men (4-0) led by three points late in the first half after trailing by 11 points to begin the game. Eastern trailed only 38-36 at halftime. While EOU was the team that closed out the first half, it was the Vandals who set the tone in the second. Eastern's Jason Mumm tied the game at 38-38 on the first possession of the second half, but Idaho answered with a 17-2 run to take a 55-40 lead at the 15:15 mark.

Mumm led the Mountaineers with 21 points, making 9 of his 13 shots from the field. Thomas McCarthy added 18 points and made five three-pointers for the fifth time this season. Travares Peterson finished with 13 points. Eastern Oregon shot 43 percent from the field and made 12 shots from behind the perimeter.

"Man, is he a hard guard,” Idaho head coach Don Verlin said of McCarthy. “They did a good job of getting him shots and he's got a quick release. I think he's as good a shooter as you'll see in college basketball."

Idaho was led by five double-digit scorers and Shawn Henderson and Djim Bandoumel each finished with team-highs of 14 points. The Vandals shot 56 percent from the field and 50 percent from behind the arc.

The Mountaineer women and men each travel to College Place, Wash. for regular season matchups at Walla Walla University. There will be live audio streams of the games on EOUSports.com.
