EOU Women Open the Season With Win

LA GRANDE, Ore. – The Eastern Oregon University women's basketball team opened the 2010-11 regular season with a 61-45 win over Montana Tech Saturday.

The Mountaineers (1-0) got the opening win behind three double digit scorers led by Shaylee Nielsen's game-high 16 points. The senior was 3 for 8 from behind the perimeter and 5 of 12 from the field. Kyle Miller began the season with a double-double adding 10 points and 10 rebounds. Nyesha Joseph began her EOU career with 10 points off of the bench. Miller and Nicole Redd each had three assists.

Kelsey Dewit had a game-high 12 rebounds to lead Tech. She also added 10 points. Bryn Hasquet finished with 10 points as well. The OreDiggers were held to 25 percent shooting from the field, and 22 percent shooting from behind the arc.

Eastern made 31 percent of its shots from the field (19-61), and eight of its 21 three-point attempts. The Diggers (0-1) outrebounded the Mountaineers 53-46. Montana Tech also committed 18 turnovers to EOU's 15. Eastern Oregon had 12 assists to Tech's nine.

The Mountaineers led at halftime 22-17, and led by as many as 12 points three times in the first half. Eastern's largest lead was 16 twice late in regulation.

EOU will play another game in the month of October, when it host Walla Walla University next Saturday at 7 p.m. in Quinn Coliseum.
