LA GRANDE, Ore. --
Dan Stafford became the third Eastern Oregon University men's basketball player to record a double-double this season in a 92-85 win over No. 5 Warner Pacific College.
The senior led the 24th ranked Mountaineers to an important Cascade Collegiate Conference victory Friday night. The Auburn, Wash. native scored 20 points and grabbed a season high 10 rebounds in the victory. Stafford was 4 for 5 from behind the perimeter and 7 of 9 from the floor.
Eastern Oregon (16-6) (9-3) shot just under 52 percent from the field and 44 percent from behind the perimeter. The Mountaineers held the Knights to 42 percent shooting from the field and 40 percent for three-pointers.
A game that was predominately back-and-forth for the first 20 minutes, blew open in the second half. After trading baskets early in the game, Eastern jumped out to a 16-8 lead before WPC made a 11-2 run to take back the lead. The Knights had their largest lead, 28-24, with 6:24 remaining in the first half.
The Mountaineers got the lead back and led 41-37 at halftime. Warner Pacific (16-5) (8-3) would tie the game at 42 just into the second half. EOU then made its move, by countering with a 10-0 run forcing a Knights' timeout. Eastern stretched the lead to 70-50 after a
Thomas McCarthy jumper with 9:46 remaining in regulation.
EOU would match its largest lead once more a few minutes later, but it never got anymore than 20 points. Warner Pacific would some of its 15 three-pointers during a rally to end the game, but got as close as the final deficit of seven.
The Knights were led by Webster Moreland's game-high 24 points. Reggie Guyton scored 17 points after going 5 for 14 from behind the perimeter. Kaylone Riley fouled out after getting 10 points, 11 rebounds, and four blocks in 32 minutes. Jared Mace and Jake Glisson each added 10 points.
Josh Cottle finished with 19 points and four assists for the Mountaineers.
Jacques Wilson chipped in 15 points, while
Jordan Gregg and
Josh Landsverk contributed 14 and 12 points respectively.
After a wild night in the Cascade Conference which featured No. 3 Oregon Tech falling at Northwest Christian in overtime, No. 5 Warner Pacific losing, and No. 20 Evergreen State falling at home to Northwest in overtime, the Mountaineers move back into a tie for first place in the conference.
Eastern Oregon host Concordia Saturday night, and Warner Pacific travels to The College of Idaho. The Yotes defeated Concordia Friday night, 88-67.
