Mountaineer Track and Field Opens Season

EOU heads to Nampa for BSU Bronco Invitational Saturday

The Eastern Oregon University track and field begins its 2010 season Saturday at the Jacksons Indoor Track at the Idaho Center in Nampa, Idaho, at the BSU Bronco Invitational.

The meet is the first of four indoor meets for the Mountaineers. The indoor season concludes on March 4 at the NAIA National Championships in Johnson City, Tenn. The outdoor season begins March 13 in Nampa.

Eastern will take 22 athletes to Saturday's meet. The Invitational features teams from NCAA Div. 1, 2, and 3, the NAIA, junior colleges, and unattached participants.

"With 11 men and 11 women traveling, the main focus is on finding out where we are and qualifying folks for nationals," EOU track and field coach Ben Welch said. "Entries are geared to give individuals the best shot possible at qualifying this weekend. Included in the meet schedule are the rarely run in the west, 600 and 1,000 meter runs. Most of the athletes will only do one or two events in order to boost the qualifying potential in their main event."

The meet begins at 9 a.m. with the field events in session one, the women's weight throw and women's high jump. Session two, the running events, begins at 10:20 a.m. The women's 1,000 meter run will start the second session.
