The last time Warner Pacific College and the Eastern Oregon University women's basketball teams met it was last year … well, Dec. 31, 2009 to be exact. The Mountaineers had their own version of a ball dropping as the clock expired on New Year's Eve.
EOU (14-7) (8-3) beat the Lady Knights in Portland with a buzzer-beating follow from
Kyle Miller. The sophomore snuck behind the WPC defense and put-back a miss for the final points of the back-and-forth game.
The victory was the first since Dec. 19, 2007, at Warner Pac for the Eastern women. The Knights had beaten the Mountaineers two straight times before that game. The last time WPC came to La Grande they left victorious. Warner Pacific ended EOU's 2008-09 season with a Cascade Collegiate Conference tournament first round win.
That game was between the league's forth and fifth seeded teams, Friday they meet as the conference's second and third best records. Since falling to EOU, the Lady Knights (12-7) (7-3) have reeled off five straight victories. Warner Pacific has won the last three games by an average of 16 points.
Friday's match-up pits two of the top shooting teams in the conference against each other. Eastern has the league's best field goal percentage (.419), and Warner Pac is third in the CCC (.409). EOU has the best field goal percentage defense (.358) and is first in three-point field goal percentage (.378).
Eastern is 27-10 all-time versus the Knights. The Mountaineers won 11 straight games versus WPC from 2000 to 2004. WPC won four consecutive games over EOU from 1987 to 1989. Eastern Oregon has won 10 out the 12 meetings in Quinn Coliseum since 2000.
The Warner Pacific men's basketball team brings its No. 5 national ranking to La Grande Friday. The last No. 5 that came into Quinn Coliseum left with a seven-point loss, Oregon Tech, on Dec. 19, 2009. Eastern has won two straight games over teams ranked No. 5, both were Oregon Tech, this season and last season.
The Mountaineers have won 10 out of the last 11 meetings against top 25 teams in La Grande. EOU has won four out of the last five meetings with a top 5 team in Quinn Coliseum. The loss came to Warner Pacific, No. 4 at the time, on Feb. 3, 2007, 78-72.
Eastern is 11-10 against the Knights since the millennium, winning seven of 10 in La Grande. Warner Pacific's two victories in Quinn Coliseum against EOU, is more than any other conference team in the past five seasons. The Mountaineers own the all-time series, 25-19.
On Dec. 31, 2009, No. 21 Eastern led at No. 9 WPC at halftime, 40-36. But, the Knights opened the second half on a 13-0 run, and would stretch that to 25-5 over a five minute span. The Mountaineers would get as close as six points, before falling, 88-80.
Jordan Gregg finished with game-highs of 22 points and 11 rebounds, but six Warner Pacific players finished scoring double figures.
Friday's game matches the top two field goal percentage defensive teams in the conference, EOU (.415) and Warner Pacific (.417), and the top two offensive rebounding teams in the league, WPC (43.3) and Eastern (40.9).
The Knights' Kaylone Riley leads the conference in rebounds (11.1) and blocks per game (4.5). The Las Vegas native is the only player in the conference to average a double-double. Riley's 4.5 blocks per game average leads the nation, and is higher than all nine other conference teams' average per game. He had 13 points, nine rebounds, six blocks, and six assists in the meeting with EOU this season.
Warner Pacific has three players that average in double figure scoring, led by Jake Glisson's 18.6 points per game, which is second in the conference. NCAA Div. 1 transfer, Reggie Guyton, is third in the league with 2.1 steals per game and sixth in assists per game, 4.2.
Friday's games tip-off with the women at 5:30 p.m., followed by the men at 7:30 p.m. Both games will be video streamed through EOUSports.com and CCC TV. Live stats will be available for both games as well.
