Mountaineer women lose for first time in four years at Oregon Tech

KLAMATH FALLS, Ore. -- The Eastern Oregon University women's basketball team fell for the first time in four years at Oregon Tech Friday, 75-62.

The Mountaineers (13-7) (7-3) had an early lead taken away and then could never catch up. EOU made only six of its 26 three-point attempts (23 percent) from behind the perimeter. Eastern shot 35 percent from the field in the game.

Eastern Oregon led 17-12 with 12:47 left in the first half after a Kyle Miller jumper. Oregon Tech responded with a 19-5 run over the next 10 minutes to lead 29-21 after a Jazzy McDaniel lay-up.

That run proved to be the separation needed for Tech to control the momentum for the rest of the game. Eastern closed within four points, 42-38, with 12:40 remaining, but that was as close as EOU would get. The Lady Owls stretched its lead to 15 points twice after that, and cruised late in the game.

OIT (12-10) (5-5) committed 15 turnovers, compared to the Mountaineers 12. Tech outrebounded EOU, 40-36.

The Owls' Brittany Cherry led all scorers with 21 points on 10 of 15 shooting from the field. She also grabbed a game-high seven rebounds. Lisa Busch added 11 points, and McDaniel finished with 10.

Kelsea Hurliman led EOU with 15 points. The freshman was 5 for 10 from the field, including 3 of 7 from the perimeter. Tana Stickney and Miller each had 10 points and six rebounds for Eastern. Salena Leavitt had a game-high five assists.

The Mountaineers travel to Ashland to face Southern Oregon (15-6) (4-6) Saturday. The Raiders fell to The College of Idaho, 65-64, Friday night. Eastern beat Southern on Dec. 18, 2009, in La Grande, 61-57. SOU was ranked No. 9 at the time.

Eastern Oregon slid to a second-place tie with Northwest University in the conference standings. C of I sits alone in first, and Warner Pacific is a half-game behind EOU and Northwest.
