Game Previews: Corban College

Eastern Oregon looks to complete successful weekend Saturday

The first half of the Cascade Collegiate Conference schedule comes to an end Saturday.

It's been a wild and confusing race so far to say the least. College of Idaho sits atop the league standings, with Eastern Oregon and Northwest just one game behind them. Only two other teams are at .500 or better, Warner Pacific and Oregon Tech.

Two of the conference preseason favorites, Southern Oregon and Concordia, have struggled in league play and sit in the bottom half of the conference standings.

Corban (8-11) (3-4) also sits in the bottom half of the conference and comes to Eastern Oregon Saturday. The Warriors have not won in La Grande since Feb. 26, 2007, when Corban won the Cascade Collegiate Conference tournament title.

The Warriors and Mountaineers met in the conference tournament every season from 2005 to 2007. EOU walked away with two of three victories, the lone loss ended the 2004-05 season in La Grande. Eastern holds a 27-14 advantage over the school once known as Western Baptist College. The Mountaineers have an 8-3 advantage over Corban in Quinn Coliseum since 2000.

Katie Steigleman is filling the shoes of her older sister, Jessica, who is the leading scorer in Corban women's basketball history. Katie was named the conference Player of the Week two weeks ago. As a freshman last season she averaged 16.7 points per game and started in 28 of the 29 games. The Eugene native led the team in points, rebounds, and steals per game.

This season Katie averages 15.6 points, 5.7 rebounds, and 3 steals per game. She is second in the conference in steals, fifth in scoring, and fifth in free throw percentage.

The Corban men's team rides into the weekend on an eight-game losing streak. The Warriors (6-12) (1-6) lone conference victory came by a Northwest Christian forfeit.

Corban is led by sharp shooting Ben Potloff who averages 16.83 points per game on 48 percent shooting from the field. Ian Logan and Erik Cronrath add an average 16.67 and 12.5 points per game for the Warriors.

One of the key problems Corban has faced this season is taking care of the ball. The Warriors turn the ball over an average 18 times a night. Corban is at a league-low in scoring margin (-6.7), field goal percentage defense (.457), three-point field goal percentage defense (.316), and rebound defense (38.4). The Warriors are ninth out the 10 conference teams in six other major statistical categories.

Fans don't have to go back to far to find a championship-caliber team at Corban. Since the Cascade Collegiate Conference formed in 1992-93, the Warriors have had eight 20 win seasons. Corban has won two conference titles and been invited to four national tournaments. The problem is the Warriors have had only one winning season since changing its name to Corban College from Western Baptist in 2005. The Warriors went 16-14 in 2005-06.

Corban does hold a 26-19 advantage over Eastern in the all-time series, but has never beat he Mountaineers as Corban College. The last victory the Warriors had over EOU came on Feb. 18, 2005 in Salem as Western Baptist College. Eastern has won eight consecutive games since. The Mountaineers are 8-3 versus Corban in La Grande since 2000.

It's throwback weekend in La Grande. The EOU women's and men's basketball teams are wearing retro jerseys. Fans who come to the game wearing 80s themed attire will only have to pay $1 for a general admission ticket and receive a limited edition "Wear Retro Get Loud" T-Shirt.

The game will be streamed with live video on EOUSports.com through Penn Atlantic and CCC TV services. Live stats are also available. Women's tip-off is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. followed by the men's tip at 7:30 p.m.
