CALDWELL, Idaho -- The Eastern Oregon University women's basketball team fell to the University of the Puget Sound Friday in the first game of the Best Western Caldwell Inn and Suites Lady 'Yote Classic, 67-49.
Despite 20 points from
Alyssa Garro, the Mountaineers could not overcome Puget Sound's 52 percent shooting from the floor in the second half. Garro, a junior, made six of her nine three-point attempts.
Eastern (4-3) rallied from a 19-5 early deficit to take a 29-28 halftime lead. Garro hit a three-pointer with 27 seconds left in the first half to give EOU its first lead. The Mountaineers had their largest lead with 14:26 remaining in regulation, 38-35. Just over a minute later, Eastern Oregon lost its final lead.
Puget Sound (3-1) went on an 18-2 run over a six-minute stretch. They continued on the run extending a 53-40 lead to 67-47 with 1:55 left in regulation. The 20-point margin was the largest of the game.
Jocelyn Riordan's 20 points led Puget Sound. The Loggers shot 44 percent from the field in the game and 38 percent from behind the perimeter. Claire Ely and Lindsay Layland scored 16 and 11 points for UPS. Layland added 10 rebounds.
Shaylee Nielsen finished with 10 points for the Mountaineers. EOU turned the ball over 23 times compared to Puget Sound's 14. Eastern outrebounded the Loggers, 34-32.
Eastern Oregon will play Whitman College Saturday at 5:30 p.m. MST, in the tournament's third game. Puget Sound closes the four-game classic against the host, College of Idaho. The Lady 'Yotes knocked off Whitman Friday night, 66-48, behind 22 points from Nicole Gall.
