Burke Powers Eastern to Walk-Off Victory over No.3 Seed Campbellsville

MOBILE, Ala. – Hope Burke delivered a dramatic performance to open the week, powering No. 2 seed Eastern Oregon Softball to a thrilling 9-8 walk-off victory over No. 3 seed Campbellsville in the NAIA National Tournament Opening Round.

Natalie Dimitrov got the start in the circle for the Mounties and quickly set the tone, recording a strikeout and a groundout before working around a walk to end the inning with another ground ball out. Eastern carried that momentum into the bottom of the first, where Burke came through in a big way. With two runners on base, Burke launched a three-run homer to left field to give the Mounties an early 3-0 lead.

Campbellsville chipped away in the top of the third, using a walk and a double to score its first run of the game. Eastern answered immediately in the bottom half of the inning. Isabella Lauerman drew a leadoff walk and advanced to third on a passed ball and a Tiger error before scoring on a wild pitch to restore the Mounties' three-run advantage at 4-1. The Tigers prevented further damage by recording three straight outs to close the inning.

Eastern's defense remained steady in the fourth, allowing just one baserunner who was ultimately stranded. Campbellsville responded with a quick inning of its own, holding the Mounties scoreless to keep the game at 4-1. In the top of the fifth, the Tigers rallied back into the contest, stringing together two singles and capitalizing on a two-out surge to plate three runs and tie the game at 4-4.
Campbellsville took control in the sixth inning. A single, sacrifice bunt, and triple gave the Tigers their first lead of the day before they added insurance runs with a single, walk, double, and bunt to stretch the advantage to 8-4.

Despite the shift in momentum, Eastern refused to fold. Burke sparked the bottom of the sixth with a single, and after Kelly Monaghan delivered a two-out hit, Alexis Blankenship ripped a two-RBI double to cut the deficit to 8-6 heading into the final inning.

Maliyah Mann continued her relief effort in the seventh and kept the Mounties within striking distance, forcing two groundouts and a popup to hold Campbellsville scoreless. Down to their final chance, Eastern mounted one last rally. Raygun Klippert opened the inning with a single through the left side, and Lauerman followed with a hit to left field to put the tying runs on base.

With Burke stepping back to the plate, the senior delivered once again. On the first pitch of the at-bat, she crushed a three-run home run to right-center field, walking off the Tigers in the same fashion she opened the game and sending the Mountaineers to the championship side of the bracket with a 9-8 comeback victory.

With the win, Eastern Oregon advances to Day 2 of the Opening Round and will face the winner of No. 4 seed Indiana Tech and No. 1 seed University of Mobile on May 12 at 2:30 p.m. CT. Indiana Tech enters the matchup with a 34-16 overall record after finishing 14-6 in Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference play and securing an automatic berth with a runner-up finish in the conference tournament. Host school Mobile owns a 35-15 overall record, went 15-7 in Southern States Athletic Conference action, finished the regular season ranked No. 13 nationally, and earned an at-large bid while hosting the Opening Round.
