LA GRANDE, Ore. – The Eastern Oregon Mountaineers had its season opener against the Simpson Redhawks halted due to lightning, resulting in a no contest on Sunday afternoon at Community Stadium.

Before the game was called off at halftime, the Mountaineers took a commanding 3-0 lead in the first half. EOU outshot Simpson 8-1, displaying a potent offensive attack, while keeping the Redhawks on their heels.

Eastern Oregon's first goal came at the 22:17 mark when Simpson scored an own goal. Less than 12 minutes later, Edgar Romero Perez capitalized on a penalty kick, netting his first goal of the season to put the Mounties ahead 2-0. Cristian Trujillo then extended the lead at the 36:55 mark, with an assist from Manuel Rodriguez.

Simpson managed just one shot in the first half, which was blocked by the Mountaineer defense. EOU's keeper Anthony Lemus didn't face a shot on goal during his 34 minutes in net, while Simpson's Jesus Montoya was kept busy, making two saves in the opening period.

Unfortunately, at the 42:49 mark, the game was delayed due to lightning, and after waiting out the storm, officials called the game, declaring it a no contest.
