Eastern Oregon Scores Final Five Points to Defeat Corban in Battle of Top Ten Teams

SALEM, Ore. – The No. 2-ranked Eastern Oregon Mountaineers volleyball team staged a thrilling comeback in the final moments of Saturday's match against No. 7-ranked Corban, scoring the last five points to edge out the Warriors in the Cascade Collegiate Conference Game of the Week.

The Mountaineers dominated the first two sets, winning 25-14 and 25-17, before Corban mounted a comeback, taking the third set 25-22 and narrowly escaping with a 27-25 win in the fourth. Avoiding a reverse sweep, EOU trailed 14-11 in the final set but responded with five consecutive points to secure the 16-14 victory.

Eastern Oregon's defense was anchored by Kiauna Mack, who set a new career high with 14 blocks, breaking her previous best of 12. Mack's 13 block assists also tied the program's single-match record, and she now holds the second-best mark in Mountaineers' history for single-match blocks. The junior trails only Elaine McKinstry, who had 15 in 2000.

Any attacks that passed through the Mountaineers' stifling defense at the net were often met by the trio of Hailey Arritola, Olivia Wegner, and Hannah Ramage, each finishing the game with double-digit digs.

Offensively, it was a breakout game for Emma Burlingame, who led EOU with a team-high 12 kills, followed by Keira Vaughn and Mack with 12 and 11 kills, respectively. Setter Alexis McMurtrey orchestrated the attack, dishing out 27 assists and recording 8 digs. The Mountaineers hit .148 as a team, but their defense, which totaled 32 blocks, proved to be the difference, holding the Warriors to a .058 hitting percentage.

For Corban, Makayla Roginski led with 14 kills, while Emma Bischoff and Kendra Bittle chipped in with 11 and 12 kills. Bischoff also led the Warriors' defensive efforts with 16 digs and 3 blocks.

With the victory, the Mountaineers improved to 13-1 overall and 5-1 in CCC play, while the Warriors dropped to 10-2 and 6-1 in conference.

Match Stats:

  • EOU (Kills-Errors-Attempts): 52-28-162 (.148)
  • Corban (Kills-Errors-Attempts): 60-49-189 (.058)
