ASHLAND, Ore. — Coming off last week's victory over No. 24 College of Idaho, the Mounties faced a tough road game on Saturday, falling 49-21 to No. 16 Southern Oregon at Raider Stadium. Despite putting up a fight in the second quarter, the Mountaineers (5-5, 4-3) couldn't overcome the Raiders' explosive offense, which put up 35 first-half points.
Southern Oregon (8-2, 5-2) took an early lead on a 65-yard touchdown run by Gunner Yates in the game's opening minute. The Raiders continued to pressure Eastern, building a 35-14 lead by halftime, highlighted by a 52-yard interception return for a touchdown from Jalin Speed. The Mountaineers scored twice in the second quarter, with Quincy Glasper connecting with Malachi Spurrier for both touchdowns.
Glasper completed 19 of 32 passes for 218 yards, three touchdowns, and two interceptions. Spurrier led Eastern's receivers with eight catches for 113 yards and two touchdowns, while Tanner Sweek added a late touchdown catch. Glasper also contributed 49 rushing yards, but the Mountaineers were held to just 66 yards on the ground against a tough Raiders defense, which sacked Glasper seven times.
Southern Oregon dominated on the ground, amassing 344 rushing yards. Yates led all rushers with 269 yards on 21 carries, while quarterback Blake Asciutto threw for 202 yards and three touchdowns on 22 completions.
The Mounties were led defensively by the trio of Sosaia Raass, Nehemiah Medrano, and Jason Grant, each finishing the game with nine tackles. Medrano also contributed a tackle for loss and a forced fumble, which was recovered by Grant.
Gabe Foster led the Raiders' defense with six total tackles and three sacks.
Eastern Oregon will look to close its season on a high note next week as it returns home to face No. 4 Montana Western for the second time this season. Kickoff is set for 1:00 p.m. PT.
