Mounties Edged in Two Close Games Against Yotes

CALDWELL, Idaho – Mountaineers Baseball battled in two close games Saturday afternoon but came up short in both against rival College of Idaho. The Yotes held off Eastern Oregon by scores of 13-8 and 8-5 to secure the day one sweep. With the two losses, EOU is now 9-32 overall and 2-14 in league play.

Game 1 – College of Idaho 13, Eastern Oregon 8
How it Happened

• Lifting the Yotes (26-23, 14-8 CCC) to the win was a 12-run outing that spanned between the third and fifth inning. They outhit the Mounties, 18-12, and both squads had a clean game defensively.
• The first run of the game went to C of I on a RBI groundout in the second to make it a 1-0 game. EOU tied the game on an Easton Watterson RBI single in the third, scoring Adrian Roa.
• The Yotes 12-run outing began with four in the third. A two run homer got it started to make it a 3-1 score. An RBI fielder's choice, followed by a single put the Yotes in front 5-1.
• EOU scored a run in the top of the fourth on an RBI groundout from Garret Kollar to make it 5-2. C of I then tacked on three runs to go ahead 8-2. An RBI and another two run homer gave the Yotes a six-run lead.
• In the fifth, C of I scored five runs to jump ahead 13-2. They scored the first two on a triple and sacrifice fly. The Yotes managed to load the bases and back-to-back hit by pitches scored two runs before a bases-loaded walk added the fifth and final run.
• Eastern did not allow another run the rest of the game, but a late rally fell short for the comeback. They got within seven, 13-6, scoring four runs in the sixth.
Elliott Marks doubled to center field, scoring Hector Carreon for the first run of the sixth. Kollar then hit a deep RBI single to center field, scoring Marks to make it a 13-4 game.
• EOU then loaded the bases and added two more runs. The final two runs for the Mounties both came on bases-loaded walks before C of I escaped the jam.
• Fast forward to the ninth, EOU added two more runs with the hopes of rallying. A Carreon two RBI double to right field scored two runs before the Yotes closed out the game.

Mountaineers Stat Leaders
Hector Carreon batted 3-5 with two RBI and scored two runs.
Elliott Marks was 2-5 at the plate with an RBI and a run scored.
Jamie Powell hit 2-4 in the opener and scored one run.
Easton Watterson went 2-4 with two RBI and drew a walk.
Garret Kollar batted 1-4 with two RBI and scored one run.
Jaydon Yancey (1-5) pitched 4.1 frames in the start and had two strikeouts. 

For the Yotes
• Skyler Sadora went 3-4 with a home run, had three RBI, and scored three runs.
• Alex McFarland-Smith was 3-6, hit a home run, scored three runs, and had two RBI.
• Jonah Hultberg batted 2-4 with a pair of runs scored and one RBI.
• Ben Gaff and Dillon Danner both went 2-4 at the plate with an RBI.
• Weston Miller hit 2-4 in the win with two RBI and scored a run.
• Connor Root (5-4) pitched 5.1 innings in the start and struck out two batters.

Game 2 – College of Idaho 8, Eastern Oregon 5
How it Happened

• In the second game, the Yotes used a four-run first inning to jump ahead and never surrendered the lead. They outhit EOU, 12-10, but the Mounties had no errors in the game.
• Giving the Yotes the early lead was a pair of home runs. A solo shot and a two-run homer accounted for three runs. The fourth came on a double to left field.
• Eastern got on the board in the third to end their drought. A McKlane Elgin RBI groundout scored Easton Watterson to make it a 4-1 game.
• The Yotes never scored more than one run over the next seven innings. They tacked on a run in the bottom of the third on a deep single to center field to go up 5-1.
• In the fifth, C of I added another run to go up five, 6-1, on an RBI double to left field. Easter then scored six runs in the sixth to get within one, 6-5.
• Getting things started was Hector Carreon who hit a home run to make it a 6-2 game. Adrian Roa then hit a two RBI single to right to cut the Yotes lead to just two, 6-4.
• The final run for Eastern came on the swing of Elgin. He knocked a single to dead center, scoring Roa to make it 6-5.
• The Yotes held on though and never allowed EOU to score again. They tacked on a run in the sixth and seventh to escape with a three-run win.

Mountaineers Stat Leaders
Adrian Roa tallied two RBI, hitting 1-4 and scored a run.
Hector Carreon hit a home run, finishing 1-5 with an RBI and a run scored.
Elliott Marks had the most hits, going 3-5 at the plate.
Austin Gerding was a clean 2-2 and drew a walk. 
Nick Jennings (1-5) pitched five complete frames in the loss and struck out two batters.

For the Yotes
• Kirby Robertson batted 3-5 with two RBI and scored one run.
• Skyler Sadora hit a home run, going 1-4 with a run scored.
• Jonah Hultberg was 2-4 at the plate and drew a walk.
• Ben Dudley batted 1-2, hit a home run, had two RBI and scored four runs.
• Dimick Wood (6-3) pitched 5.2 innings in the win and had two strikeouts.
• Erik Wisenor earned the save, his 12th, and had one strikeout.

By the Numbers
5 - C of I has won each of the last five games over EOU.
4 - Hector Carreon now leads the team in home runs with four.
4 - Elliott Marks has recorded three hits in four games now this season.
