SPRINGFIELD, Ore.- The Mountaineers returned to action Wednesday evening as they kicked off the second round of the Cascade Collegiate Conference Tournament. No. 4 seeded Eastern took on No. 1 and CCC regular season champion Northwest University. After a hard fought match that took overtime to determine a winner, the Mounties fell to the Eagles 1-0.
Two teams were familiar with each other matching up just 10 days ago to finish Cascade Collegiate Conference regular season play. In the last matchup, EOU was able to hand Northwest their only CCC loss of the 2022 season.
Intensity was high this time around as a total of 39 fouls were called. It was the Eagles who were able to edge out the shot battle in the first 90 minutes of play, totaling 11 shots to Eastern's 10. Leaving everything on the field, both teams played lock down defense as the match remained scoreless after 90 minutes of play sending the match to overtime.
The overtime rules consist of two 10 minute halves that were played to completion regardless of score. As overtime started both teams looked to make a push. It was the Eagles who were able to strike first in overtime giving them a 1-0 lead. A 102nd minute goal by Northwest ultimately was the game winning goal of the match as the Mounties were unable to answer in overtime.
The loss ends CCC postseason play for the Mountaineers. Making the National Tournament will require an at-large bid. The Mounties will await to see if their ticket is punched to the National Tournament as selections will be announced Monday, Nov. 14 at 9 a.m..
