CALDWELL, Idaho – Eastern Oregon University finished their performance at the Les Schwab Invitational with another comfortable victory Saturday afternoon. The Mountaineers took control early outscoring the Bobcats 46-20 in the first half on their way to a 70-55 win to move to 2-0 on the year.
Defense was once again a strong suit for EOU as they locked down UC Merced early. The Mounties kept the Bobcats in check holding them to 22.2% shooting in the first half while continuing to get good looks for themselves. Eastern shot over 50% in the first half lead by
Beverly Slater who put up 15 of her 21 points in the half on six of 10 shooting. EOU also won the advantage on the glass early outrebounding the Bobcats 27-18.
The Bobcats responded in the second half and actually outscored Eastern down the stretch but it was too little, too late. The Mountaineers 26-point lead at the half proved to be too much even though UC Merced outscored the Mounties 35-24. Damilola Sule lead the charge for the Bobcats putting up 12 points and six boards in the second half helping the Bobcat offense shoot 37.5% from the field compared to Eastern's 30%. Eastern still walked away with the 15-point victory, 70-55.
After going 2-0 on the weekend, Eastern will shift their focus to next weekend's tournament held in Caldwell, Idaho, the Best Western Caldwell Inn and Suites Classic. The Mountaineers are slated to take on the Montana Western Bulldogs for their first matchup at 1 p.m. Mountain Time.
