LA GRANDE, Ore. – Mountaineer Women's Basketball completed their regular season sweep of Interstate-84 rival College of Idaho Tuesday night with a 62-47 win inside Quinn Coliseum. With the victory, Eastern Oregon is now 15-7 overall and 12-2 in CCC play.
How it Happened
• A combined effort of stout defense and strong shooting propelled Eastern to the win as they held the Yotes (13-9, 7-7 CCC) to just 33.3% shooting overall, while shooting 46.3% on the flip side.
• Neither team shot the ball well from deep with the Mounties having the edge at 23.1%-15.4%. Helping EOU in the win as 13 points from its reserves and a 32-26 edge in points in the paint.
• Along with the advantage in the paint, the Mounties once again showed their strength in glass cleanup. Eastern outrebounded C of I 41-30 and had 14 boards come on the offensive end.
• In the opening frame, the Mountaineers used a late surge to grab a 10-point lead on the Yotes. A fast start was also key for Eastern as they jumped out to a 7-0 lead to start.
• The Yotes looked to close the gap and managed to get within six, 12-6, with just over three minutes to play. Eastern responded by giving up just two points to end the first and led 18-8.
• The start of the second quarter was a lot of the same for EOU's offense as the team put up 15 points. C of I added 11 points but trailed by 14 at the break.
• The Mounties offensive pace in the first half as they led by double figures the entire second quarter. Eastern managed to lead by as much as 17 a pair of times before going into the break with a 33-19 lead.
• Out of the halftime break, the Yotes managed to keep pace in the final 20 minutes of play, but their slow start was too much to overcome. Eastern kept their efficiency up, outscoring C of I 29-28 in the second half.
• In the first two minutes of the third, EOU jumped ahead 18 two times as shots from
Sailor Liefke and
Maddy Juul gave them the lead. Their respective baskets put EOU ahead by scores of 37-19 and 39-21.
• Going into the fourth quarter, Eastern outscored C of I 17-16 in the third and led 50-35. Things got a bit interesting in the fourth as the Yotes tried to make a late comeback.
• EOU's lead dwindled to just 10 points in the final frame as quick baskets by the Yotes made things somewhat close. C of I eventually made it a nine-point game, 56-47, with just over two minutes to play.
• Despite the efforts of C of I, EOU responded and closed out the game scoring the final six points, all of which came on free throws. The clutch shooting of the Mounties secured them the 15-point win.
