LA GRANDE, Ore. – Mountaineer Women's Basketball continued their winning ways Saturday afternoon with a gritty 68-65 comeback win over in-state rival Southern Oregon. The win pushed Eastern Oregon's winning streak to six straight and puts the team's overall record at 14-7, with an 11-2 mark in conference play.
How it Happened
• The win for the Mountaineers helped them avenge a 55-47 road loss at SOU (17-4, 10-3 CCC) back on Dec. 3. The victory also helped Eastern remain undefeated at home with a 6-0 record.
• The Mountaineers played from behind nearly the entire afternoon, but it was a 19-point fourth quarter that propelled them to victory. EOU also held Southern to just 26 second half points after giving up 39 in the first two quarters.
• For the game, EOU shot 48% from the floor overall, but was just 33.3% from deep. Free throws also were a challenge as the Mountaineers finished 15-22 for 68.2%.
• Defensively, Eastern held the Raiders to 42.6% from the floor and 38.1% from three-point range. SOU was just 5-9 at the charity stripe for 55.6%.
• Putting together another superb performance was guard
Sailor Liefke with 32 points. She had help as forward
Haley Robinett posted a double-double with 11 points and 11 rebounds.
• Although EOU did not hit the 40-rebound mark in this win, the Mounties had a solid edge in glass cleanup at 39-24 against the Raiders.
• Through the entirety of the opening frame, Southern held the lead but never led by more than two possessions. EOU got within one a handful of times but went into the second trailing 21-17.
• In the second quarter, back-to-back triples by Liefke gave Eastern their first lead, 23-21, in the opening minutes. EOU held a 30-27 lead at the midway point, but a 12-2 run to end the frame gave Southern a 39-32 edge at the break.
• The Mountaineers 15 points was their lowest of any quarter in the game, but in the second half, defense picked up for them. They gave up just 14 and 12 points, respectively, and scored 36 points.
• EOU opened the third quarter with a 13-3 run to jump back ahead 45-42. Robinett accounted for seven of the Mounties' 13 points to fuel the run.
Taylor Stricklin added four to help EOU jump ahead, while a jumper from Liefke started the run.
• The two squads were locked at a 47-47 tie with 4:55 to play in the quarter, but SOU pieced together a 6-2 run to lead after three. The Raiders small surge gave them a 53-49 lead going into the fourth.
• Southern managed to lead by as much as six in the first two minutes of the fourth, 58-52, but EOU slowly chipped away at the lead. It was not until there was 1:43 left to play in regulation when EOU tied the contest.
• A 10-4 scoring surge by the Mountaineers that lasted nearly the entire quarter brought the score to a 62-all tie. A jumper from Liefke tied the game and like the night before, she took over.
• Over the final 1:42 of play, Liefke scored the Mountaineers final eight points. Her efforts, combined with solid defense by the Mounties, gave them the 68-65 home win.
