WALLA WALLA, Wash. - No. 13 Eastern Oregon Women's Soccer posted its second straight shutout on Friday night as the Mountaineers took down NCAA Division III foe Whitman College, 4-0, on the road. With the win, EOU improves to 2-1-0.
How it Happened
• Helping EOU secure the win was a barrage of shots in both frames and a defense that held Whitman (0-2-1) to just two shots on the night. Eastern finished with 14 total shots and 10 came on goal, while the Blues had just one of their two shots come on goal.
• The Mountaineers applied pressure on offense throughout the first period, but stops by the Blues defense kept the match scoreless through the majority of the first period before a late Mountaineers' goal ended the drought.
•
Morgan Farrington had two solid chances to find the back of the net in the early portion of the first period with two shots on goal. She had a shot in the 10th and 11th minute, respectively. Both were well inside the penalty area but a pair of saves by the Blues kept the game locked at 0-0.
•
Sarah Mitchell took a long shot from nearly 30 yards out that went high.
Lindsay Balkenbush also added to the offensive pressure in the 24th minute with a shot from just outside the penalty area but it sailed right.
• The Blues managed just one shot in the first frame that came in the 16th minute but
Madeline Barker was able to notch the save. Late in the period,
Erika Skindlov had a shot come on goal but the Blues made another save to keep EOU off the board.
• The Mountaineers barrage of shots did not slow down and their efforts paid off late in the period.
Brooke Ford got deep into the left side of the penalty area and found the back on the net in the 43rd minute. Her shot hit the lower left end of the net past the goalkeeper's reach to give Eastern a 1-0 lead.
Mackinley Gregus was credited with the assist on the goal.
• Going into halftime, the Mountaineers held a staggering 8-1 shots edge and a 5-1 shots on goal lead. In net, Barker only had to notch one save as the Eastern defense was stout in limiting the Blues offense.
• The Mountaineers wasted little time in the second period extending their lead to two goals. In the 48th minute,
Yahaira Chavarria-Mondragon hit the high center of the net from the right side just outside the penalty area.
Darby McDevitt was credited with the assist on the goal to make it a 2-0 game.
• Nine minutes later, Eastern pushed the lead to 3-0 on a goal from
Katie Arnold. She hit the high left end of the night from 15 yards out at the top of the penalty area in the 57th minute to give the Mountaineers the comfortable lead.
• The score remained at 3-0 in the Mountaineers favor until late in the frame when
Alexandria Segeberg put EOU by four late in regulation. Segeberg scored in the 84th minute with a shot to the high right corner of the net to bring the game score to its final of 4-0.
• The Mountaineers once again had the edge in shots in the second period at 5-1 and 4-0 in shots on goal. The Blues never managed to establish any rhythm as they were shutout for the third time this season.
