CALDWELL, Idaho – Eastern Oregon University Baseball picked up its second win of the season on Sunday afternoon as the Mountaineers split day two of its Cascade Collegiate Conference opening series with College of Idaho. EOU fell in game one, 10-0, but bounced back for a 5-1 win in game two.
Game 1 – College of Idaho 10, Eastern Oregon 0 (8 Innings)
How it Happened
• The Yotes (11-12, 3-5 CCC) racked up their 10 runs on 10 hits while Eastern Oregon (2-6, 2-2 CCC) mustered just three in the shortened contest. Both teams played well on defense as neither committed an error in the contest.
• The Mountaineers looked like they were going to have a decent game hitting wise as they had two hits in the first inning. Both hits were singles coming from
Carsten Manderbach and
Trevor Curl respectively. Both runners were left stranded though.
• The game remained scoreless through the first three innings as both pitchers and defense played well in the early going.
Jacob Farnsworth got the starting nod and through the first three frames he did not allow a single hit. He worked 1-2-3 outings in two of the three innings to keep the C of I bats at bay.
• The final hit for the Mounties came in the top of the fourth as Manderbach hit a single to second. He managed to steal second before being picked off. The Yotes ended the scoreless drought with three runs in the bottom of the inning. A double and a triple scored the first two runs before the final run came in on a rundown play that happened between first and second.
• Neither team scored in the fifth as the Yotes clung to the 3-0 lead. C of I worked a 1-2-3 outing to start the sixth and followed up with a run scored in the bottom of the frame. A two-out single to deep right field allowed the run to score and push the Yotes lead to 4-0.
• Following a three up, three down frame to start the seventh, the Yotes looked to add on more runs but mustered just one hit in the frame. Eastern got a runner on base to start the eight but he was left stranded.
• The Yotes ended the game early on the 10-run rule with six runs scored in the eighth. They tallied five hits. Helping them secure the win was a bases clearing triple that put the score at 8-0. Prior to that a bases loaded walk allowed a run to score. A wild pitch brought in the ninth run before another bases loaded walk ended the first contest early.

Carsten Manderbach was 2-3 in the game to lead the EOU bats and he drew one walk.

Trevor Curl had the only other hit going 1-3. He also drew a walk in the games.
• Jacob G=Farnsworth pitched seven complete innings in the loss (0-2). He tied a game-high in strikeouts with seven.
For the Yotes
• Weston Miller led all players going 3-4 at the plate with five RBI in the win.
• Austin Van Horne was 2-3 and scored three runs to go along with an RBI.
• Jonah Hultberg finished 1-3 and scored two runs.
• Connor Root picked up the win (2-1) in 7.1 innings pitched. He had seven strikeouts to tie the game-high.
• Hunter Kirkpatrick was credited the save, his first of the season.
Game 2 – Eastern Oregon 5, College of Idaho 1
How it Happened
• The second matchup of the day went in EOU's favor with the team leading wire-to-wire over C of I. The Yotes barely outhit EOU 10-9, but had three errors for the game. The Mounties had just one.
• The first Yotes error came in the top of the first as
Brooks Dyer got on base thanks to a fielding error by the shortstop. He was plated home three batters later on a two-out RBI single from
Elliott Marks for the unearned run to give EOU A 1-0 lead.
• The score remained 1-0 until the top of the third as the Mountaineers tacked on another run to go ahead 2-0.
Carsten Manderbach got on with a single and advanced to second on a throwing error by the shortstop. Curl scored him with an RBI single to left field.
• The lead grew to 3-0 for eastern in the top of the fourth.
Easton Watterson drew a leadoff walk and stole second on the next at bat. Two batters later
Blake Loftus scored him with an RBI groundout to the shortstop. EOU then worked a 1-2-3 frame to end the fourth and had held the Yotes scoreless up to that point.
• The lone run for the Yotes came in the bottom of the fifth. They worked a 1-2-3 outing to get back on offense. A leadoff walk followed by a single and an EOU error allowed the leadoff man to get to third. A fielder's choice to second base brought in the run and made it a 3-1 game after five innings of work.
• The score remained 3-1 until the top of the ninth. Both teams went three up, three down in the sixth. EOU managed a hit in the seventh but made nothing of it but was able to work a 1-2-3 bottom of the seventh to stay in front. Both teams got hits in the eight but made nothing of it.
• In the top of the ninth,
Blake Loftus hit a one-out double to get on for EOU.
Kyle Lund then singled up the middle and Loftus made it to third. A failed pickoff attempt by the Yotes allowed Loftus to score and advanced Lund to third. He was scored on an RBI sacrifice fly from
Brooks Dyer to bring the final score to 5-1.

For the Yotes
• Carter Vieira led C of I going 2-5 with one RBI.
• Jonah Hultberg was 1-4, while Austin Van Horne went 1-3.
• Ryan Nolan was 1-3 and scored the lone run for C of I.
• Austin Van Horne suffered the loss on the hill to fall to 2-2. He worked six complete innings and had three strikeouts.
