Mountaineers Look to Get Back on Track at MSU-Northern

LA GRANDE, Ore. - Eastern Oregon Football is back on the gridiron this weekend and will look to get back to its winning ways. The Mountaineers head north once again to face conference foe that they have done well against in recent memory.

KICKOFF
• Mountaineers Football hits the road this weekend following their second bye week of the 2021 season. Eastern will look to snap a three-game losing streak when they head north to face Montana State-Northern.
• Eastern Oregon is coming off its third straight loss after falling to No. 23 Rocky Mountain College at home two weeks ago during Homecoming. The loss puts the Mountaineers record at 3-3 overall with the same mark in Frontier Conference play.
• The Mountaineers were picked to win the Frontier Conference in the preseason coaches' poll. They tallied three first place votes and totaled 39 points to edge out College of Idaho and Montana Western.
• Following the loss to Rocky Mountain, EOU slipped out of the NAIA national rankings altogether. They were in the receiving votes category going into week four.
• MSU-Northern enters the weekend still in search of its first win of the season. The Lights are 0-7 overall and are 0-6 this season against Frontier Conference opponents.
• The Lights were picked to finish last in the preseason conference coaches' poll. They managed just eight points in the rankings.
• Going into the contest, Eastern has done well against MSU-Northern in recent memory having won each of the last seven games.

EOU ATHLETICS SPECTATOR POLICY
• Spectators will be allowed at EOU sporting events, but masks will be required to be worn correctly (over mouth AND nose) at ALL indoor and outdoor events per state and local policy. This is subject to change at any time.
• Failure to comply with conference or institutional attendance policies will result in removal from venue and any further EOU contests.

SERIES HISTORY
• The Mountaineers and lights have squared off 23 times since 2004 and it has gone in EOU's favor. Eastern leads the series at 17-6 and has won each of the seven match-ups.
• On the road the Mounties are 7-5 against MSU-Northern and 10-1 at home. In Havre, EOU has won each of the last four contests against the Lights.
• Under the direction of Tim Camp, EOU holds a 15-2 record against the lights. They are 7-2 on the road and 8-0 at home inside Community Stadium.

LAST MEETING WITH MSU-NORTHERN
HAVRE, Mont. – Eastern Oregon University Football closed out the regular season Saturday afternoon with a 21-6 road win over the Montana State University-Northern Lights. With the win, the Mountaineers finish the spring season with an overall record of 3-1 with the same mark in Frontier Conference play.
 
How it Happened
• Helping the Mountaineers take down the Lights (0-4, 0-4 Frontier) was 414 yards of total offense, while their defense held MSU-Northern to just 206. EOU also managed to convert 9-15 third down situations and held the Lights to just 2-12 in the same category.
• Also helping the EOU secure the win was the defensive run game that held the Lights to -4 yards for the afternoon. On the flip side, Eastern posted 285 yards in the ground game and averaged 5.6 yards per carry.
• The game was scoreless after the first quarter as both squads had their defenses dialed up. The scoreless bout held through the majority of the second quarter until the Mountaineers scored just before halftime to take a slim 7-0 lead into the break.
• The lone score of the first half of action came on the merit of senior running back John Lesser. He ended a 10-play 67 yard drive that lasted just over three and a half minutes with a four yard touchdown run. Zachary Cahill made it a seven-point EOU lead with the PAT.
• The game remained in the Mountaineers favor at 7-0 until the fourth quarter when they tacked on two more touchdowns to lead 21-0. The Lights lone score of the game also came in the fourth on a touchdown pass but a missed PAT held MSU-Northern to six points for the afternoon.
• The lead grew to 14-0 for Eastern in the early going of the fourth quarter. The Mountaineers drove 67 yards down the field in seven plays to score their second touchdown of the game. The drive ended when Kai Quinn found Saige Wilkerson on a 24 yard pass for the score.
• The final touchdown of the day for the Mountaineers came with just over 6:30 to play in the finale. EOU got the ball following a defensive stop deep inside MSU-Northern territory. The Lights punted the ball but barely got past midfield.
• Needing just 51 yards to score, EOU moved down the field in just seven plays and still managed to run 3:02 off the clock. The drive was capped off as Quinn hit Tanner Zenke on a short six yard pass for the score. Cahill made his third straight PAT of the game to put EOU up 21-0.
• The Lights managed to avoid the shutout with a touchdown pass at the 1:40 mark on the clock. A 16 yard pass to the endzone ended a quick four-play 80 yard drive that lasted just 20 seconds. The PAT failed as the Mountaineers held on for the 15-point road win.

SCOUTING MSU-NORTHERN
• The Lights enter the weekend still in search of their first win of the season. They are 0-7 overall and 0-6 in conference play. 
• Offensively, MSU-Northern is managing just 13.3 points per game on 295.7 yards of total offense per outing. Their rush offense leads the way at 160.1 yards per game, while the passing game is averaging 135.6 yards per game.
• Defensively, opponents are putting up 34.9 points per game against the Lights. They surrender 412.3 yards of total offense. Penalties have plagued the Lights as they have 62 on the year for a total of 629 yards.
• On the ground, Izayah Boss leads the rushing attack with 593 yards on 136 carries. He also leads the team in rushing touchdowns with four and is averaging 84.7 yards per game.
• Three quarterbacks have seen action this year. Kaymen Cuerton leads the way at 6 games played. He is 54-120 with three touchdowns but has been picked off six times.
• Second on the team in rushing is Cuerton as well. He has tallied 364 yards on the ground on 76 carries and has scored twice.
• Tyrese Rios has been the go to option at wide receiver with 22 catches and 342 yards. Both are team highs and he has one touchdown on the year.
• Jake Horner is second in catches and yards. He has pulled down 20 receptions for 238 yards and has one touchdown grab on the year.
• Leading the team in total tackles is Dylan Wampler with 71. He has 42 that have come on a solo effort and he is the team leader in tackles for loss at 9.0. He is second in sacks at 3.0 to go along with two forced fumbles and three fumble recoveries.
• Second on the team in tackles in Hunter Riley with 54. He has also pulled in three interceptions and broken up six passes. 
• Leading the way in interceptions is Isaiah Paul with five to go along with a team best eight pass breakups. He has 17 tackles on the year and 1.0 sack. His five interceptions is tied for third most in the NAIA. 
• Leading the team in sacks in Joe Fehr with 4.5. He is second in tackles for loss at 6.0 and has tallied 19 tackles this season.

LAST TIME OUT
LA GRANDE, Ore. - Mountaineers Football dropped its third straight game Saturday afternoon as they suffered a 34-17 loss to No. 23 Rocky Mountain College inside Community Stadium on Homecoming. With the loss, Eastern Oregon falls to 3-3 overall with the same mark in Frontier Conference play.

How it Happened
• Defense played a big role in the Battlin' Bears (5-1, 5-1 Frontier) win as they picked off the Mountaineers three times and forced  fumbles, all of which they recovered.
• Rocky also posted over 400 yards of total offense in the win with 441. The rush attack had 217 yards while the passing game racked up 224 yards and posted four touchdowns.
• The Battlin' Bears struck first in the first quarter. With 11:50 on the clock, Rocky struck on a four yard touchdown pass to cap a six play, 22 yard drive. Setting up the short drive for Rocky, was a strip sack against Kai Quinn.
• The score remained at 7-0 until late in the first quarter when Victor Rosas found the back of the end zone on a one-yard run. His score capped a four-play, 30 yard drive for EOU and Zachary Cahill's PAT knotted the score at 7-all with two minutes left on the clock.
• The Battlin' Bears responded right before the end of the first quarter scoring with 38 seconds left to play. Quarterback Nathan Dick found a wide open Lucas Overton for a 57 yard touchdown pass to make it a 14-7 game.
• Defense picked up for both teams as the score remained at 14-7 until the 9:38 mark in the second when Rosas scored on yet another one yard run. His efforts capped an even longer drive for Eastern that ate 2:52 off the clock.
• Rosas' score tied the contest at 14-all midway through the second quarter but the Battlin' Bears held the Mountaineers to just a field goal the rest of the afternoon.
• Eastern had multiple chances throughout the first and second half to score but key turnovers caused by Rocky kept the Mountaineers offense at bay.
• The Battlin' Bears tacked on two more scores by way of a touchdown and field goal before halftime to lead by 10 at the break. The first score, a touchdown pass, came just over a minute after EOU's touchdown.
• Scoring for Rocky was Trae Henry who pulled in a 38 yard reception for the touchdown to make it a 21-14 game. It remained at 21-14 until the final minute of the quarter when Riley Garrett nailed a 48 yard field goal to make it a 24-14 edge for Rocky.
• EOU's final score of the afternoon came right before halftime. Cahill nailed a 21-yard field goal attempt as the clock expired. Going into the break, EOU trailed by just four, 21-17, but never scored again.
• In the third quarter, just one touchdown was produced, which came from the Battlin' Bears. They added seven points with 10:50 to play in the frame, when Lucas Overton pulled in a 19 yard touchdown pass to end a 10-play, 75 yard drive that ate up 4:10 of clock time.
• Rocky had the chance to make it a 10-point third quarter but the Mountaineers blocked a 40-yard yard field goal attempt to keep the score at 31-17.
• Despite EOU's block, the Battlin' Bears touchdown gave them a 31-17 advantage going into the fourth and final quarter of. They tacked on a 33-yard field goal with 13:44 on the clock to bring the final score to 34-17. 

THE MOUNTAINEERS IN FRONTIER CONFERENCE PLAY
• The Mountaineers are in a three-way tie for fourth with a 3-3 record.
• EOU is now 73-57 all-time in Frontier Conference play under Head Coach Tim Camp.

THE MOUNTAINEERS AT HOME
• The Mountaineers are now 1-2 at home this year following the 34-17 loss to Rocky Mountain.
• Eastern Oregon is 36-33 on its home field under the guidance of Tim Camp.
• Since the installation of the turf field in 2018, the Mountaineers are 7-8 at Community Stadium.

THE MOUNTAINEERS ON THE ROAD
• EOU is 2-1 on the road this season following the 24-3 road loss at Southern Oregon. EOU's two road wins are against Carroll College and Montana Tech.
• With the loss to SOU, the Mounties had a five-game road win streak snapped.
• The Mounties were 2-0 on the road in 2020 with wins at Rocky Mountain and MSU-Northern.

WHEN LEADING AT THE HALF
• This season, Eastern is 2-0 to start the 2021 campaign when leading at the half.
• The Mountaineers were 2-1 in 2020 when they led the opposition at halftime. The lone loss came against College of Idaho.
• EOU is now 52-10 under Tim Camp when leading at the half after defeating Montana Western.

21 AND UP
• Eastern Oregon is 1-0 this season when scoring 21 or more points.
• The Mounties are now 22-25 under Tim Camp when scoring 21 or more points.
• Last season, EOU scored 21 or more points in all four games.
• When scoring 30 or more points, the Mounties are 1-0 this season and 18-9 under Tim Camp.
• Under the guidance of Tim Camp, EOU is 31-2 when scoring 40 or more points.

SCORING STREAK INTACT
• The Mountaineers have scored at least a field goal in each of its last 156 games.
• The streak dates back to week eight of the 2006 season.
• The last time EOU was shutout was back on October 14, 2006 against Carroll College, 34-0.

2021 FRONTIER CONFERENCE/NAIA STAT LEADERS
• Zachary Cahill is one of 10 kickers left in the NAIA who has yet to miss a field goal and is the only kicker left in the Frontier Conference. He is 7-7 on the year.
• Cahill is also just one of three kickers in the NAIA who has a perfect field goal percentage while attempting five or more kicks. 
• Cahill is also a perfect 11-11 on PAT attempts this year which is tied for first in the NAIA with 45 other kickers.
• The Mountaineers have only surrendered 30 penalties for 265 yards. Their number of penalties is 13th least in the NAIA, while their penalty yards is 10th lowest.

MOUNTAINEERS IN THE CAREER RECORD BOOKS
• Three active players currently rank in the all-time top-10 of the EOU record books in quarterback Kai Quinn and defensive linemen Chase Van Wyck and Sage DeLong.
• Quinn is tied for fourth in career rushing touchdowns with 19. He needs one more to tie for third and is six away from tying for first.
• Quinn now ranks seventh all-time in career rushes with 396. He is eight carries away from moving up to sixth on the all-time list.
• Quinn has moved up one spot in the top-10 in career rushing yards. He is ninth at 1,564 yards and is 55 yards away from moving up to eighth.
• In the passing game, Quinn is third all-time in touchdowns thrown with 51. He is second in pass attempts at 1,361. He now ranks second as well in pass completions with 705. 
• Quinn is second all-time in total offense yards with 10,868. He has 9,304 passing yards and 1,564 rushing yards.
• Van Wyck now ranks third all-time in career tackles for loss with 40.5.
• Van Wyck ranks second all-time in career sacks with 21.5. To become the career leader, Van Wyck needs 8.0 sacks.
• DeLong is tied for fourth in career tackles for loss with 36.0. He is currently fourth in career sacks with 18.0 and is 2.5 away from moving up to third.

AROUND THE FRONTIER CONFERENCE
• Following a bye week for most of the conference teams, this weekend features another full slate of games as teams battle for the top spot in the standings.
• The key match-up will be No. 22 Montana Western at College of Idaho. Both teams are 4-2 in conference and tied for second in the standings. Kickoff is set for 12 p.m. PT.
• Carroll College (3-3, 3-3 FC) heads to Billings, Mont. with a chance to dethrone conference leader No. 16 Rocky Mountain (5-1, 5-1 FC). Kickoff will be at 12 p.m. PT.
• Montana Tech (2-4, 2-4 FC) heads to Ashland, Ore. to take on Southern Oregon (3-3, 3-3 FC). Kickoff is at 1 p.m. PT.

A WIN OVER MSU-NORTHERN WOULD…
• Snap a three-game losing streak for the Mountaineers.
• Extend the Mounties win streak over the Lights to eight in a row.
• Push EOU's record to 4-3 overall with the same mark in conference play
• Be the team's 16th win over the Lights under the direction of Tim Camp.

A LOSS TO MSU-NORTHERN WOULD…
• Snap a seven-game win streak for the Mounties over the Lights.
• Hand the Mountaineers their third straight loss on the road this season.
• Drop the Mountaineers overall record to 3-4 and be their fourth straight loss.
• Drop EOU's record to 15-3 against the Lights under the direction of Tim Camp.

MOUNTAINEERS FOOTBALL HISTORY
• In 88 seasons of EOU Football the Mountaineers have compiled a 342-518-14 (.399) record in 874 total games played.
• EOU won a school-record 10 games in 2016 and made it to the Semifinals of the NAIA FCS Playoffs. EOU has posted a .500 record or better in 31 seasons.
• EOU has won or shared a combined four conference titles in school history with the last coming in 2020. The conference crown in 2020 is the first as a member of the Frontier Conference.
• The Mountaineers have qualified for the NAIA FCS Playoffs once, with their lone appearance coming in 2016.

CAMP AT THE HELM
• Eastern Oregon Head Coach Tim Camp is 77-64 (.546) all-time in his 14th season of leading the Mountaineers.
• Prior to becoming the EOU Head Coach, Camp was the offensive line coach for EOU from 2016-18.
• Prior to working at Eastern Oregon, Camp was an offensive line coach and offensive coordinator at Bucknell University.
• Camp has also served as an assistant coach at University of Nebraska-Omaha, University of the South (Tenn.), and Western Oregon.

• The Mountaineers return home next weekend for their final game in the month of October. Eastern will play host to Carroll College with kickoff set for 1 p.m. PT inside Community Stadium.
