EOU Earns 82-71 Road Victory To Earn CCC’s 5th Seed

EUGENE, Ore. – The Eastern Oregon men's basketball team claimed fifth place in the Cascade Collegiate Conference, earning an 82-71 road victory over Northwest Christian on Saturday to end the regular season.
 
Entering the night in a three-way tie for fifth place with both Warner Pacific and their Saturday opponent in NCU, the Mountaineers (16-13, 10-10 CCC) used a strong shooting night to defeat the Beacons and earn the fifth seed outright with Warner Pacific's loss. The Blue and Gold will visit No. 4-seed Northwest on Wednesday in the CCC Quarterfinals.
 
Junior Max McCullough dropped 24 points as he made four three-pointers. He also had five rebounds, four assists and three steals. Junior Jamal Heckard had a hot shooting night, scoring 17 points as he made 5-of-9 three pointers. Heckard also finished with seven assists and six boards in an all-around strong game. Senior Landon Jones added 14 points and seven rebounds while senior Jarek Schetzle had a double-double with 12 points and 14 boards. Junior Andreas Brown added 10 points off the bench.
 
The Blue and Gold shot a solid 40 percent from the field overall, including a 10-for-22 mark from behind the arc. EOU also shot 16-for-19 (84.2%) from the free throw line.
 
The Beacons were led by Ernest Ugoagu's 20 points. Seven different scorers had six or more points for NCU.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Mountaineers never trailed on Saturday as they jumped out to an 8-0 lead to start. Later, the Beacons tied the score 27-27 as they kept the score close late. However, leading 35-34 with 1:57 to play in the half, Heckard hit three-straight three pointers to end the half and give the Blue and Gold a 44-36 halftime lead.
 
EOU got off to a strong start in the second half, jumping out by as many as 15 points 63-48 after a Brown basket with 13:13. The Mounties then led by a game-high 17 points with 9:01 to go after a Jones jumper. From there, the Beacons cut EOU's lead down to three with an 18-4 run at 74-71 with 2:18 to go.
 
Schetzle answered with a basket and EOU hit their next six free throws in a row by Schetzle, Heckard and Jones to keep the game out of reach for the Beacons.
 
BY THE NUMBERS
10 – Both team's made 10 three pointers on a good shooting night for both squads.
0 – EOU did not trail once in the game, leading or tied from start to finish as they got off to an 8-0 lead.
5 – The Blue & Gold earned the CCC's No. 5 seed for a third year in a row with a 10-10 conference record.

The Mountaineers are the fifth seed in the CCC tournament, visiting Northwest on Wednesday at 7 p.m. in Kirkland, Washington in the CCC Quarterfinals.
