EOU Women's Basketball Narrowly Misses CCC Title in Loss to NCU

EUGENE, Ore.- Closing out their last regular season game, the No. 25 Eastern Oregon women's basketball team narrowly missed a share of the CCC regular season title with a 74-66 loss at No. 16 Northwest Christian (23-5, 17-3 CCC) on Saturday. The Mountaineers end their regular conference season with a record of 15-5 and 21-9 overall, taking second place in the CCC and earning the No. 2-seed in the postseason tournament, which begins Tuesday.

For the Mountaineers, junior Taylor Stricklin led the team earning 15 points and going 5-for-9 from behind the arc. Senior Rachel Fielder collected 13 points, seven rebounds, and went 3-for-3 from the free throws line. Senior Jane Nelson snagged 12 points along with seven rebounds. Senior Emma Logan led the team with 10 rebounds, adding six points and four assists. Senior Kiley Smith also grabbed eight boards. HOW IT HAPPENED
Trailing by just a couple points for most of the first half, EOU was down by scores of 17-13 after the first quarter and 35-32 at halftime as they were consistently fighting to take the lead against a strong Beacons team.

Starting the third quarter eager to take this last CCC regular season game from the Beacons, the Mountaineers finally tied it up at 45-45 with a good free throw by Nelson and then took the lead for the first time all game, 47-45, after another good shot by Nelson. With momentum from the lead change, the Mountaineers ended the third quarter up by five at 53-48. However, NCU had fuel left in the tank.

Although the Mountaineers started the first few minutes of the fourth quarter up by a game-high of 10 points at 58-48, the Beacons inched their way back into contention. With 4:07 left to play and only down by two at 62-60, the Beacon's took the lead back after connecting on a three point shot making it 63-62. A 22-4 overall helped the Beacons get ahead by eight points at 70-62. After that, the lead didn't change again and NCU took the game 74-66.
