Mountaineers Sweep Providence for 1st Victories

PENDLETON, Ore. – The Eastern Oregon softball team earned its first victories of the year in convincing fashion, sweeping Providence in the first Cascade Collegiate Conference doubleheader of the season on Friday at the Blue Mountain Community College softball field.

GAME 1 | Eastern Oregon 14, Providence 6 (F/6)

The Mountaineers (2-10, 2-0 CCC) earned their first win of the year by run-ruling the Argos (0-2, 0-2 CCC) in six innings. Leading 10-6 entering the bottom of the sixth, EOU scored four runs by an Abby Giles walk-off RBI double. The Mounties had four hits in the inning.

The Blue and Gold used patience early to get on the board, scoring eight runs in the first two innings despite just one hit. The Mounties got runners on base early and often, drawing nine walks in the first two frames. EOU put up three runs in the first and five in the second to take an early 8-1 lead.

Freshman outfielder Brittney Bertrand went 2-for-3 with three runs and two RBI to lead the offense. Junior outfielder Madison Parker went 1-for-4 with two runs and two RBI. Freshman shortstop Taylor Dow scored three runs, while freshman second baseman Alaina Carson had two runs and two RBI, senior outfielder Katie Silvestri had two runs batted in and senior catcher Jordan Henley scored two runs with an RBI.

Junior Amanda Smith made the start, allowing three runs, two earned, in four innings for the victory.

The Argos' McKenzie Staats hit a solo home run to get the Argos on the board in the second, and another RBI later in the game.

GAME 2 | Eastern Oregon 7, Providence 5

The Mountaineers used another early lead to down the Argos, scoring four runs in the second and three more in the fourth to go ahead 7-0.

EOU nearly run-ruled Providence for a second game in a row, but the Argos scored four runs in the top of the fifth to pull within three runs. A run in the sixth brought the score to 7-5 as Providence looked for a late comeback. However, sophomore Brianna Zweygardt shut the Argos down in order in the seventh to preserve the lead and earn the save.

Senior Ashton Kazmierski made the start, earning her first win of the season. She allowed four runs in 4.2 innings with three strikeouts.

Parker led the offense with a 2-for-3 day, one run and an RBI. Sophomore Haley Ebner also had two hits with a run, Smith went 1-for-4 with a run and RBI while both Carson and Henley each finished 1-for-2 and a run and RBI each.

McKenna Montgomery paced the Argos with an RBI two hits. Sam Hernandez also had a run and two hits

The Mountaineers will look for the sweep of Providence on Saturday with the first game in CCC action and the second counting as a non-conference matchup.
