Mounties Score Two in 2nd Half to Defeat Yotes 2-1

CALDWELL, Idaho. – Despite allowing the first goal of the game, the No. 9 Eastern Oregon women's soccer team remained undefeated on the year, defeating the College of Idaho 2-1 on the road in Cascade Collegiate Conference action.

The Yotes tallied the first goal of the game just after halftime, scoring in under three minutes after the break as Laura Staropoli finished a nice cross to make it 1-0 C of I.

After a first half that was evenly played with four shots apiece, the Mountaineers (5-0-2, 2-0-1 CCC) took control in the second half after falling behind. Senior Nan Kiebert wasted little time to tie the score as she collected a through ball from Kaitlyn McLeod in the 56th minute, depositing it in the back of the net to tie the score at 1-1.

As the clock ticked towards a potential overtime, freshman Erika Skindlov stepped up with the biggest goal of her young collegiate career, slotting home a through ball from Kiebert to put EOU up 2-1 in the 77th minute. The Mounties were able to hang on the rest of the way, not allowing another shot the rest of the half to defeat the Yotes 2-1.

The Mountaineers outshot C of I 12-5 overall and 7-1 on goal for the match. Kiebert led the offense with three shots and two on goal while sophomore Mackinley Gregus also had two shots on frame. Goalkeeper Savannah Hutchinson earned the win in her first career start.

The Blue and Gold will have the rest of the weekend off, next returning to La Grande for the conference home openers, Friday against Carroll and Saturday vs. Providence.
