EOU Football Defeated 35-10 by Orediggers

LA GRANDE, Ore. – The Eastern Oregon football team was knocked off by Montana Tech, 35-10 on Saturday in the team's home opener at Community Stadium.

The Orediggers (1-1, 1-1 Frontier) used a grinding running game to control the clock and wear down the Mountaineer (1-2, 1-2 Frontier) defensive front. Montana Tech ran the ball 53 times for 226 yards, led by Jed Fike's 29 carries for 167 yards and three touchdowns.

The EOU offense had trouble finding a rhythm early and was hindered by four turnovers. Senior running back Victor Dias had 11 carries for 45 yards. Junior wide receiver Isaiah Thomas caught five passes, including a couple of diving snags, for 36 yards.

The Orediggers scored on their first drive of the game, moving the ball 68 yards on seven plays, capped off on a five-yard touchdown pass from Jet Campbell to Nate Sander to take a 7-0 lead. Tech later went up 21-0 after rushing touchdowns of three yards and 29 yards by Fike.

EOU looked to make a dent in the Montana Tech lead before halftime, being forced to settle for a 23-yard field goal after their best first half drive of 13 plays for 63 yards. Kicker Jaiden Machuca knocked it through the uprights to make the score 21-3 at halftime.

The Mounties got the ball out of the halftime locker room, but fumbled on their first play from scrimmage. The Orediggers capitalized, as Fike punched in his third touchdown to make it 28-3.

EOU never quite recovered from there. In the fourth quarter, Campbell hit receiver Trevor Hoffman on the first play of the drive for a 59-yard score to go up 35-3.

The Blue and Gold responded with their best drive of the game. Quarterback Joey Aliff came into the game and provided a spark on offense, leading an 11 play, 79 yard drive for the team's lone touchdown. Aliff capped it off with a tough three-yard run into the end zone, carrying a couple defenders with him across the goal line.

Safety Haziel Ledezma and linebacker Jacob Shults led the defense with seven tackles each. Dakota Hibbs had the team's lone sack while Eric Prom recovered a fumble.

The Mountaineers will next take a break from the Frontier Conference and visit NCAA Division I opponent Portland State on Sep. 21. Kickoff is set for 2:05 p.m. from Hillsboro Stadium.
