EOU Football Stymied by Portland State 59-9

HILLSBORO, Ore. – The Eastern Oregon football team was faced with a tough opponent on Saturday, falling to NCAA Division I Portland State 59-9 in a non-conference matchup.
 
The Vikings (2-2) scored the first 31 points of the game, leading 31-0 at halftime with three touchdowns coming through the air. The Mountaineers (1-3, 1-2 Frontier) got on the board for the first time right out of the halftime locker room. Wide receiver Tanner Zenke took the opening kickoff 74 yards to the PSU 24 yard line. One play later, quarterback Kai Quinn completed an outside pattern to receiver Christian Blaser, who broke a couple tackles to get into the end zone for his first career touchdown, a 29-yard score.
 
Portland State continued to add on in the second half with touchdown passes of 19, 17, 15 and 16 yards. The Mounties had the final score of the game, a 24-yard field goal by Jaiden Machuca in the fourth quarter.
 
A positive for the Mountaineers was their ability to limit the PSU turnovers. EOU had just one turnover in the game, but were stymied by a tough Viking defense throughout.
 
Running back Victor Dias ran six times for 25 yards, while Kaler Moore had five rushes for 18 yards.
 
On the defensive end, Haziel Ledezma paced the team with seven tackles including five solo. Joey Gutierrez and Peter Manville each had six total tackles. Brennen Hull forced a fumble that was recovered by PSU.
 
The Mountaineers return to Frontier Conference play next week, visiting Montana Western on Sep. 28 at 1 p.m. Mountain time.
