Lucky 13: EOU’s 13 Blocks Lead to 13th Win in Sweep of Yotes

LA GRANDE, Ore. – The No. 8 Eastern Oregon volleyball team earned its second-straight sweep, this time defeating rival No. 20 College of Idaho in three sets (25-19, 25-21, 25-17) Thursday night in Cascade Collegiate Conference action.

The Mountaineers (13-1, 3-1) hardly trailed in any set in the match, and never by more than three points. A key to the night's victory was a 13-3 advantage in blocks in a dominant effort up front by the team's middles.

Sophomore Cambree Scott led the block party with eight total blocks including one solo. Senior Megan Bunn had six block assists and sophomore Jet Taylor finished with five. Senior Taylor Tibbetts added four assisted blocks.

The tough upfront net presence led to just a .050 hitting percentage for the Yotes, who had 32 kills to 26 errors. On the flip side, the Mounties had 40 kills and just 14 errors for a .245 hitting percentage.

The Mounties' back row was also solid in the win, finishing with a 56-43 advantage in digs. Juniors Kiley McMurtrey and Aspen Christiansen each had 13 digs, while freshman Sade Williams posted 10. McMurtrey and Williams had two service aces apiece, with McMurtrey's coming on the final two points of the match.

On the attack, Bunn paced EOU with 13 kills. Taylor had 10 kills and a .471 hitting percentage while Scott had eight and hit .400 from the floor. Junior Madison Pilon played the whole match with 32 assists to lead all players.

For the Yotes, Jordyn Boswell and Austyn Mauzy had eight kills each. Abigail Guinn recorded 25 assists and Drew Dobney had 11 digs.

The Mountaineers have the rest of the weekend off and will resume CCC play next week with two games at home. EOU hosts Evergreen on Friday at 7 p.m., followed by Northwest on Saturday at 5 p.m.
