Moran’s Golden Goal Wins Season Opener 3-2 Over Whitworth

SPOKANE, Wash. – Newcomer Javier Moran scored the golden goal just over two minutes into the first overtime to give the Eastern Oregon men's soccer team the 3-2 victory in the season opener at NCAA Division III Whitworth on Saturday.

Moran received a cross from forward Felipe Madero in the 93rd minute, heading it inside the far post to send the Mountaineers (1-0) off in victory.

EOU owned a majority of the possession in the game, outshooting the Pirates 17-10 overall and 9-4 in shots on goal. The Mounties also had an 8-2 advantage in corner kicks, creating the most scoring chances.

Senior Carlos Solorio opened the scoring in just the eighth minute. Junior Calvin Mitchell stole the ball and fed it across to Solorio in buried it in the back of the net.

In the 37th minute, the Pirates tied the score 1-1 on a goal by Eric Shaporda. Just over a minute later, however, Mitchell restored EOU's lead with his first career goal as a Mountaineer in the 38th minute.

In the second half, Whitworth put on more pressure for the tying goal, eventually scoring it in the 70th minute on a cross finished by Drew Williams. The game would head to overtime where Moran would cap off the EOU victory.

Goalkeeper Max Rose made two saves in net for his first career win. Mitchell, senior Elvis Pavon and sophomore Madero each had three shots, with Madero putting two on net.

The Mountaineers will next host Embry-Riddle on Aug. 30 at 4 p.m. at Community Stadium.
