2019 EOU Women’s Soccer: Season Preview

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – The No. 14 Eastern Oregon women's soccer team begins its 2019 campaign on Friday with a slew of tough matchups before the conference season begins.

After winning their first NAIA Championships game last year, the Mountaineers earned a program-best No. 14 ranking. They retain that ranking entering 2019 and will be challenged early and often to maintain or improve upon it.

Schedule
Head coach Jacob Plocher put together a tough schedule for the Mountaineers, who begin the year in Nebraska with two top-15 opponents. The team visits No. 12 Hastings on Friday at 7 p.m. Central time, followed by No. 9 Midland on Sunday at 11 a.m. CT. EOU follows that up with two more top-25 matches at home even before the CCC season begins, Aug. 30 vs. No. 10 Embry-Riddle and Sep. 10 against No. 24 Hope International.

The returning group for the Mountaineers is one of its strongest in team history after losing just three starters from 2018.

Forwards
Reigning CCC Newcomer of the Year and rising sophomore Mackinley Gregus leads the group of forwards after posting 11 goals and 25 points, both ranked second on the team, in 2018. Gregus will be joined by senior Nan Kiebert, who missed a portion of last year due to injury, along with junior speedster Cailin Koupal who will be deployed on the outside, and senior Abri Cardenas and junior Morgan Farrington.

Midfielders
Despite the loss of two-time All-American Taylor Boyer, the EOU midfield remains one of the deepest positions for the team. CCC 2nd Team selection Jenna Jensen (8 points in 2018) returns along with CCC Honorable Mention junior Sarah Mitchell, Camie Edgington (20 starts) and sophomore Kaitlyn McLeod (3 goals in 2018). The team also added a number of transfers and freshmen that will be quality contributors.

Defenders
CCC Defender of the Year and All-American snub Josee Bassett will hold down the backline for her senior year. Bassett led the Mountie defense in allowing just 0.86 goals per game and less than 12 shots against per match. The rest of the backline will likely look different with returning junior Korilynn Goller set to take over an outside spot, while a few newcomers will add stability.

Goalkeepers
All-American keeper Cydni Cottrell enters her senior year after another great season in 2018. Cottrell finished with 13 wins, eight shutouts, a 0.83 goals against average and 72 total saves. The Mountaineers look for goalkeeping to be another strong point of the team this year.

Newcomers
Plocher and assistant coach Bobbye Pendleton brought in one of the best recruiting classes this year, with transfers and freshmen alike set to contribute. Freshmen forward/midfielders Erika Skindlov and Lindsay Balkenbush have already shown their nose for the goal while junior transfers Kayla Storm (San Bernardino Valley) and Katie Arnold (Antelope Valley) have solidified the midfield. Sophomore transfer Anna Hager (Washington State) and freshman Cassidy Quick have also been stout on defense.

With a loaded roster, the Mountaineers have their eyes on a third-straight CCC regular season title and an even deeper run in the NAIA Championships. The season kicks off on Friday.
