CALDWELL, Idaho  – The Eastern Oregon softball team split the first two games of a Cascade Collegiate Conference series against the College of Idaho, winning 6-5 in game one before falling 6-1 in game two on Friday.

Game 1 | Eastern Oregon 6,  (RV) College of Idaho 5

The Mountaineers (6-25, 3-14 CCC) came into the contest looking to bounce back from a series loss against Carroll College last weekend and the Mounties did just that. The Blue and Gold came out swinging the bats in the first inning, putting the pressure on the Coyotes, who are currently receiving votes in the NAIA Top-25 Poll.

To lead off the first inning, senior Rayne Spencer reached on an infield single to kick start the game. In the next at bat, senior Madison Barr laid down a bunt, forcing College of Idaho to make a wild throw and allowing Spencer to score the first run of the game. Later with Barr on third, senior Shevan DeFreitas singled to deep left-center, pushing the Mountaineers lead to two runs. The Mountaineers kept on the pressure as a few batters later, senior Brandi Bowling singled down the left field line, scoring two more runs to give EOU a 4-0 lead.

In the next half Inning, College of Idaho would bounce back quickly, scoring three runs to cut EOU's lead to one. Marissa Maddox got the Coyotes started with a ground out to first, scoring Kylie Smith. A few batters later, Delaney Atkins singled to left field, scoring another run for C of I. Later on in the inning, Taylor Eakle singled thru the hole at second base, scoring the third and final run of the inning for the Yotes, cutting EOU's lead to 4-3.

College of Idaho would then tie the game up in the bottom of the third with a shallow single to left center from Atkins. They later took the lead from Eastern Oregon off of a single from Mannah Mcnerney in the bottom of the fifth after holding the Blue and Gold scoreless for four straight innings.

In the top of the sixth, with the Mountaineers trailing 5-4, senior Sarah Bonner came up clutch with one out. Bonner smashed a two-run home run, taking the lead back from the Coyotes.

Eastern Oregon held the Coyotes scoreless the rest of the way, securing the first victory of the weekend against College of Idaho, 6-5.

DeFreitas, Bowling and freshman Haley Ebner each tallied two hits in the game while sophomore Amanda Smith earned the victory in the circle. Smith allowed five runs in seven innings, striking out four and leaving eight runners on base.

Game 2 | (RV) College of Idaho 6, Eastern Oregon 1

In the second game of the doubleheader, Eastern Oregon was held to only one run off of four hits against the Coyotes. The game started off with C of I jumping out to a hot start, scoring two runs in the bottom of the first inning. Maddox got it started with a single to left field, scoring Smith. Haley Loffer then scored later in that same inning off of a wild throw from EOU.

With a 2-0 lead, the Yotes held Eastern Oregon scoreless for the first four innings until Bonner crushed her second home run of the day, in the top of the fifth. This would cut the Coyotes lead to 2-1.

In the bottom of the fifth, C of I scored four more runs, putting the pressure on the Mountaineer offense. The Mounties were unable to cut into the lead, falling 6-1 and giving both teams a win and a loss on Friday.
