EOU Splits at C of I Behind Spencer's Complete Game

CALDWELL, Idaho – The Eastern Oregon softball team split the final two games of the four-game series at the College of Idaho. The Mountaineers fell in the Cascade Collegiate Conference finale 7-1, but bounced back with a 3-1 win in the fourth game of the series on Saturday.

Game 1 | (RV) College of Idaho 7, Eastern Oregon 1

The Mountaineers (7-26, 3-15 CCC) slipped in the deciding game of the conference counting series on Saturday, falling 7-1 against C of I. In the top of the first inning, EOU started off like they have in many games this year, scoring a bulk of their runs in the first inning. Freshman Haley Ebner approached the plate with one out and scored senior Rayne Spencer from third base on a fielder's choice ground out.

The Blue and Gold would not score any more runs in the game, tallying a total of five hits led by the seniors. Senior Brandi Bowling finished 2-for-2 while seniors Rayne Spencer, Sarah Bonner and Shevan DeFreitas each tallied a hit a piece. DeFreitas reached three times with two walks.

After the first inning, College of Idaho would go on to score at least one run in every inning except the fourth, where they were held scoreless by Eastern Oregon. The Coyotes starting pitcher Hannah McNerney threw a complete game, only allowing five hits and one earned run. This would lead the Yotes in securing the series victory over the Mountaineers 7-1 and also tally McNerney's sixth win of the season.

Sophomore Amanda Smith made the start, striking out five in five innings, allowing four earned runs.

Game 2 | Eastern Oregon 3, (RV) College of Idaho 1

In the final game of the four game set, the Mountaineers found the momentum they needed to hold the Yotes offense in check. In the top of the first, senior Madison Barr doubled to left field, putting a runner into scoring position. Two batters later, Ebner singled to center field, scoring Barr from second giving EOU a 1-0 lead in the first.

In the next half inning, College of Idaho answered, scoring one run off of a home run to center field from Haley Loffer. Loffer went 3-for-3 at the plate with the home run.

This was the only run the Mountaineers gave up, however, thanks to a strong start from senior pitcher Lauren Spencer. Spencer held C of I to only one earned run while tallying two strikeouts. The performance secured her third win and second complete game of the season.

In the top of the fifth inning, EOU gave Spencer some breathing room with the lead. With a runner on first, freshman Shelby Starr laid down a sacrifice bunt attempt, resulting in a throwing error by the Coyotes and scoring Hannah Rothwell. In the next at bat, Rayne Spencer knocked home Starr on a sacrifice fly, extending the Mountaineers lead to 3-1.

The runs were all Spencer would need in the circle, shutting down the Yotes over the final three innings. Spencer did not walk a batter and was able to strand nine runners on base.

Barr led the offense for the Mountaineers, going 2-for-4 with one run scored. Rayne Spencer and Ebner would both finish with one hit and an RBI as well.

The Mountaineers look to carry this momentum into their next series, at home against Providence on Friday and Saturday. The first games are scheduled for 2 and 4 p.m. on Friday at Peggy Anderson Field.
