Softball Claims CCC Series with 9-3 Win over NCU

EUGENE, Ore. – The Eastern Oregon softball team kept its postseason hopes alive with a 9-3 victory over Northwest Christian in the Cascade Collegiate Conference series finale on Saturday. NCU won the final non-conference game 7-6.

GAME 1 | Eastern Oregon 9, Northwest Christian 3

The Mountaineers (12-29, 7-17 CCC) utilized five Beacon errors in the first game to score nine runs in the first four innings. Senior pitcher Lauren Spencer continued her hot pitching, throwing another complete game, while allowing three unearned runs.

EOU took the lead in the first inning as seniors Rayne Spencer and Madison Barr opened the inning with back-to-back singles. Spencer alter scored on a passed ball, while Barr came across home plate on an RBI double by Shevan DeFreitas.

The Beacons took the lead in the bottom of the first with three runs, all of which were unearned due to an EOU error. From there on out, Spencer settled down in the circle to allow just three hits and no runs over the final six innings.

The Mountaineers then broke the game open with four runs in the third and three runs in the fourth. Spencer and Barr once again started the rally in the third with lead off singles. Spencer then scored after stealing third base, as the Beacons' attempt to throw her out sailed into the outfield. Barr scored on a wild pitch while freshman Haley Ebner later scored on an error. Senior Sarah Bonner ended the scoring, driving home junior Jordan Henley with an RBI single.

In the fourth inning, Barr singled home freshman Shelby Starr. Senior Brandi Bowling then followed up with a two-RBI single to give the Mounties the 9-3 lead.

Barr led the offense, finishing a perfect 4-for-4 at the plate with three runs scored and an RBI. Spencer went 2-for-3 with three runs scored and a walk.

GAME 2 | Northwest Christian 7, Eastern Oregon 6

In game two, EOU once again scored first, tallying a run in the opening frame as Ebner singled home Bowling with two outs.

The Beacons answered in the second and third innings, breaking out for six runs. A two-run home run by Anna Cardwell started the scoring before the Beacons added four more in the third.

The Mounties began to rally in the fourth inning, scoring four runs to pull within one. After Bonner led off the inning with a double, scoring on an RBI single by junior Payton Pocklington. Senior Hannah Rothwell later scored on an error before Bowling drove home two more runs on a single to cap off the inning.

NCU added a big run in the fifth inning to extend their lead back to two runs at 7-5. The run proved key as EOU nearly came back in the seventh inning with a run of their own. The Mountaineers began the inning with a walk and two hits with no outs, putting the tying run in scoring position. However, they were unable to come through with the big hit to earn the sweep on the day.

Bowling led the offense with two hits, two RBI and a run scored. Amanda Smith pitched well in relief, allowing one unearned run in 3.1 innings of work.

The Mountaineers will next host the final series of the regular season for Senior Weekend. EOU's eight seniors will play their final home games of their careers with postseason implications on the line. Friday's doubleheader is scheduled to begin at 2 p.m., followed by Saturday at 11 a.m. at Peggy Anderson Field.
