EOU Softball Slips In Opening Games vs. OIT

LA GRANDE, Ore. – The Eastern Oregon softball team fell in the opening doubleheader of the Cascade Collegiate Conference series against No. 10 Oregon Tech, slipping in the first game 8-5 and then falling 9-2 in the nightcap.

GAME 1 | No. 10 Oregon Tech 8, Eastern Oregon 5

The Mountaineers (12-31, 7-19 CCC) began the game scoring one run in the first inning off of a wild pitch to grab an early 1-0 lead. Oregon Tech then responded in the next two innings, scoring one run in the second inning off of a home run from Cierra Barkis and two more runs in the third on a home run from by Andrea Sotelo to go ahead 3-1/

Eastern Oregon answered in the bottom of the third inning, scoring a run off a ground out by freshman Haley Ebner, driving in senior Rayne Spencer to cut the deficit to 3-2.

In the top of the fourth, the Owls continued to put the pressure on the Mountaineer offense by scoring two more runs with a single down the right field line.

The Mountaineers responded again, scoring two runs of their own with a home run from Rayne Spencer, cutting the EOU deficit down to one run at 5-4. Spencer would finish the game 2-for-3 with two RBI, three runs scored and the HR.

With the Mountaineers in reach of the lead, Oregon Tech found a way to distance themselves once again. In the top of the fifth, Logan Nunes homered to left field, driving in two more runs and giving OIT a 7-4 lead. In the sixth inning, the Owls added one more run off of a sacrifice fly to make the score 8-4.

The Mountaineers got their final run in the seventh, as senior Shevan DeFreitas drove home senior Brandi Bowling with a single. However, EOU could not score any more and fell to OIT 8-5 in game one.

DeFreitas finished the day 2-for-3, while Bowling went 2-for-4.

Game 2 | No. 10 Oregon Tech 9, Eastern Oregon 2

The second game was a pitching duel between EOU's Lauren Spencer and OIT's Sarah Abramson through the first four innings, as the game was scoreless. In the top of the fifth, the Owls broke through with the first run when Logan Nunes lead off the inning with a solo home run to center field. After a costly error, OIT's Kiahna Brown doubled down the right field line to score another runner. A batter later, Ali Graham singled to left field, pushing OIT's lead to 3-0.

The Blue and Gold were quick to battled back in the bottom of the fifth as Rayne Spencer continued her hot bat with a double to center field, scoring junior Jordan Henley to cut the deficit to 3-1.

Sophomore Amanda Smith shutdown the Owl offense in the sixth as the score remained 3-1 heading to the seventh.

However, in the top of the seventh, the Owls broke out for six more runs beginning with a single from Mckenna Armantrout. In the next at bat, Ali Graham homered to left field, driving in two more runs, pushing OIT's lead to 6-1. A few batters later, Logan Nunes homered to left field, driving in the final three runs of the inning and giving Oregon Tech a 9-1 lead.

Eastern Oregon got a run in the bottom half of the seventh inning with a solo home run from senior Hannah Rothwell, but it was too little, too late as the Mounties fell 9-2.

The Mounties tallied five hits in the game, with two off the bat of Henley. Spencer pitched four strong innings before the tough fifth. Through four innings, she had allowed just three base runners.

The Mountaineers will look to finish their season and the series on a high note on Saturday at Peggy Anderson Field for senior day, with games at 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. Between games, EOU will host its senior recognition ceremony for seniors Bowling, Rayne Spencer, Lauren Spencer, Madison Barr, DeFreitas, Sarah Bonner, Rothwell and Tayler Finch
