Spencer Throws 2nd Shutout, EOU Splits at NCU

EUGENE, Ore. – The Eastern Oregon softball team split Friday's doubleheader against Northwest Christian winning game one 3-0, then falling to NCU 3-2 in the final game of the day in Cascade Collegiate Conference play.

GAME 1 | Eastern Oregon 3, Northwest Christian 0

In Game 1, Eastern Oregon (11-28, 6-17 CCC) held Northwest Christian scoreless with the help from an outstanding performance from senior pitcher Lauren Spencer. Spencer pitched all seven innings, only allowing four hits and tallying a total of five strikeouts. The performance was her fourth complete game of the year, two of which were shutouts, improving her season record to 5-5. She has pitched a complete game in three of her last four starts, going 3-0 over that span.

The Mountaineers would lend some breathing room for Spencer in the third with a single to center field from senior Rayne Spencer, giving EOU a 1-0 lead. R. Spencer would go on to finish the game 1-for-2 with the RBI and two walks.

EOU continued to support their pitcher in the fifth inning when senior Madison Barr tripled to right field, scoring two more runs. This gave EOU a 3-0 lead, clinching the first game of the doubleheader as Spencer took care of the rest. Sarah Bonner went 2-for-3 with a run scored while Shelby Starr also scored a run with a hit.

GAME 2 | Northwest Christian 3, Eastern Oregon 2

In a tough battle against Northwest Christian, the Mountaineers would just fall short, losing 3-2 in the final game of the day.

The Blue and Gold were the first team on the scoreboard in the top of the fourth inning. With a runner on second base, junior Jordan Henley singled up the middle, giving EOU a 1-0 lead and backing starting pitcher Amanda Smith, who had pitched three shutout innings to that point.

In the next inning, Northwest Christian responded with a solo home run by Anna Cardwell, tying the game 1-1. Later in the fifth, NCU's Jordan Kuykendall singled to right field, driving in two more runs to put the Beacons ahead 3-1.

The Mountaineer offense looked to comeback late as in the top of the seventh inning, senior Sarah Bonner hit a solo home run to right field, bringing EOU within one run. However, the Beacons retired three out of the next four batters, handing EOU their first loss of the day.

EOU tallied eight hits in the game as catcher Brandi Bowling went 2-for-2 and Rayne Spencer posted two more hits. Amanda Smith pitched five solid innings, striking out five and allowing two earned runs.

The Mountaineers will look to bounce back and win their second-straight series tomorrow at 11 a.m. in Eugene, Oregon.
