Softball Drops Tough Tripleheader at Carroll

MISSOULA, Mont. – The Eastern Oregon softball team battled in three close games, but ultimately came up short in a tripleheader sweep by Carroll College, 7-2, 6-5 and 4-3 on Monday in Cascade Collegiate Conference play.

GAME 1 | Carroll 7, Eastern Oregon 2

The Mountaineers (5-24, 2-13 CCC) jumped out of the gates with a run in the first inning as freshman Haley Ebner singled home senior Rayne Spencer to give EOU a 1-0 lead.

However, Carroll answered with two runs in the bottom of the inning, another run in the second and three more in the third to go ahead 6-1.

Junior Jordan Henley cut into the deficit with an RBI single in the fourth inning, scoring senior Brandi Bowling. The Saints answered with a run in the fifth and shutout EOU over the final three innings to claim the 7-2 win.

Ebner, senior Shevan DeFreitas and senior Hannah Rothwell had two hits a piece to lead the Mountaineer offense that outhit Carroll 9-2. The Saints were the beneficiary of nine walks.

GAME 2 | Carroll 6, Eastern Oregon 5

Carroll kept its momentum early into game two, scoring two runs in the first on a two-RBI single by Megan McCormick.

EOU claimed the lead in the third, as senior Sarah Bonner and Spencer each reached by walks. Senior Madison Barr then singled, scoring Bonner from second. DeFreitas followed with a two-RBI single, give the Mounties a 3-2 advantage.

The deficit was quickly erased in the bottom of the third as Carroll scored a run on a Mountie error. The EOU offense responded with a run in the fifth inning on another Ebner RBI single, scoring Spencer, followed by a sixth inning solo home run by Rothwell to make the score 5-3.

The Mountaineers came within three outs of winning, but the Saints opened the bottom of the seventh with three-straight doubles to tie the score 5-5. The Mounties walked the bases loaded to create a force out around the diamond, but Carroll's Natalie Gaber drove home the winning run with a walk-off single.

Senior Lauren Spencer came into relief for EOU and had pitched 3.2 shutout innings before the three doubles in the seventh inning.

GAME 3 | Carroll 4, Eastern Oregon 3

The Saints once again opened the game with a run in the first inning to go ahead 1-0. However, EOU was quick to answer with a run in the second and two in the third to jump ahead 3-1.

Rayne Spencer had an RBI single that scored junior Jordan Shaw in the second. Then, Bowling drove home Rothwell and DeFreitas in the third with another two-RBI single.

Carroll tied the score 3-3 with two runs in the fourth inning. In the bottom of the sixth, the Saints reclaimed the lead on a sacrifice fly.

The Saints' Brooke Brown shut EOU out over the final four innings to earn the sweep for Carroll.

Sophomore Amanda Smith made the start for the Mountaineers, allowing three runs over 3.2 innings. Freshman Brianna Zweygardt also threw 2.1 innings with just one run allowed.

The Mountaineers are back on the road on Friday and Saturday with a rivalry series at (RV) College of Idaho. First pitch from Caldwell is scheduled for 2 p.m. Mountain time on Friday and 11 a.m. Mountain time on Saturday.
