EOU Softball Earns 1st Home Victory of the Season in Series Finale

LA GRANDE, Ore. – The Eastern Oregon softball team splits the final two games of the series against Northwest on Saturday, losing 8-5 and then winning in a shutout 5-0 in Cascade Collegiate Conference play.

The Mountaineers also fell in the one inning completion of Friday's suspended game, 9-5.

GAME 1 | Northwest 8, Eastern Oregon 5

The Mountaineers (4-21, 2-10 CCC) dropped game three of the series to the Northwest Eagles (8-15, 4-8 CCC) in an 8-5 battle. Northwest would tally a four-run inning in the third, but the Blue and Gold continued to battle, keeping the game within reach.

Northwest jumped out to a one run lead in the first inning with Alexis Contreras grounding out to second, scoring Sammi Caron.

The Mountaineers gained the lead in the second inning with the help from Sarah Bonner, who singled through the left side, scoring junior Jordan Henley. Brandi Bowling then flew out to left field, scoring Rothwell and giving the Blue and Gold a 2-1 lead.

In the third inning, the Eagles' Samantha Parisio doubled to left field, tying the game up. In the next at bat, Alexis Contreras singled up the middle, regaining the lead from EOU. The Eagles would continue to rally, scoring two more runs with an RBI double from Nicola Fish and an RBI single from Carly Tighe. This would push the Eagles lead to three runs, making the score 5-2.

The Mounties continued to rally behind each other, scoring two more runs in the bottom half of the third inning. With a runner on second, Henley doubled down the line, scoring freshman Haley Ebner from second. In the next at bat, senior Hannah Rothwell singled up the middle, scoring Henley from second base, bringing the game within one run at 5-4.

The Eagles would hold on to the lead for the rest of the game, however, scoring one more run in the fourth and two more runs in the final inning. EOU only tallied one more run the rest of the way in the bottom of the fifth, when senior Madison Barr hit her first career EOU home run to deep left field. Barr finished the game 2-for-4 with a double to add to her home run. Henley and Rothwell both finished 2-for-3 with an RBI each.

GAME 2 | Eastern Oregon 5, Northwest 0

In the final game of the weekend for the Blue and Gold, EOU got a great pitching performance from senior pitcher Lauren Spencer and had one big inning off offense in support. Spencer dominated from the first pitch, holding NU to only five hits and zero runs. Spencer also struck out four and walked five batters in her first complete game shutout of her EOU career.

The first and only runs of the game came in the fifth inning for the Mountaineer, all from home runs. With one runner on, senior Rayne Spencer smashed a home run to left field, scoring sophomore Julia Hernandez and handing EOU the first lead of the game 2-0. A batter later, senior Shevan DeFreitas homered to left field, pushing the EOU lead to three runs. Ebner then reached on a walk, and would come around home on a two-run homerun to deep center field by senior Brandi Bowling, giving the Blue and Gold a comfortable 5-0 lead with two innings to play.

The rest of the way was all in favor of the Mountaineers with Spencer's terrific pitching and solid defense behind her, leading EOU to their first victory at home this season.

The Mountaineers will look to continue their performance in the finale against Carroll College in Helena, Montana on Friday, March 29 at 2 & 4 p.m.
