EOU Falls in Game 1 vs. Northwest, Game 2 Suspended

LA GRANDE, Ore. – The Eastern Oregon softball team's late comeback in game one came up short, 9-7, against Northwest, while game two was suspended after six innings due to lighting. The second game of the Cascade Collegiate Conference series will resume on Saturday in the top of the seventh inning.

GAME 1 | Northwest, 9, Eastern Oregon 7

A four-run first inning for the Eagles (6-15, 2-8 CCC) gave them an early lead that the Mountaineers (4-19, 2-8) were never able to erase. EOU scored seven runs between the third and sixth innings, but the Northwest offense kept pace to hold off a late comeback attempt by the Mounties.

Jessica Nunes and Hayden Craig each had two-RBI singles in the first inning to jump Northwest ahead 4-0. Nicola Fish hit a solo home run in the third, followed by an RBI groundout by Mikayla Wells to extend NU's lead to 6-0.

The Mountaineer offense then woke up, scoring its first run in the bottom of the third on a Madison Barr groundout, bringing home Katie Silvestri. The Eagles answered with another run of their own in the fourth on a single by Carly Tighe.

EOU scored two runs in the bottom of the fourth, started by a solo home run by junior Jordan Henley. Silvestri later had an RBI single to score senior Hannah Rothwell to cut the deficit to 7-3.

Once again, Northwest answered EOU, scoring two more runs in the top of the 6th to extend the lead to 9-3. Alexis Contreras had the big hit, a two-RBI single.

The Mounties' final surge came in the bottom of the fifth when they scored three runs. The Mounties loaded the bases with two outs, as Barr scored the first run on a walk by Rothwell. Julie Hernandez then scored on a wild pitch, before third baseman Jordan Shaw drove in Haley Ebner with another single.

EOU scored its final run of the game in the sixth as Ebner knocked home Barr to cut Northwest's lead to 9-7. However, the Eagles held the Mountaineers off in the seventh to earn the victory.

Spencer, DeFreitas and Ebner each had two hits in the game to lead EOU while Courtney Heard paced the Eagles with three hits.

Mountaineer pitchers had 10 walks in the game, but were able to leave 14 Northwest runners on base to keep EOU with a chance at the comeback.

GAME 2 | Northwest 9, Eastern Oregon 5 (Suspended after 6 innings)

The Mountaineers trail in game two of the series, which was suspended after six innings due to insufficient lighting. EOU had a great start, scoring four runs in the first inning to go ahead 4-1. Spencer, Barr, DeFreitas, Ebner, Henley and Sarah Bonner started the game with six-straight hits, including a solo home run b Spencer to start the game, to jump ahead of the Eagles.

However, Northwest tallied two runs in the second inning, one in the third and fourth and four more in the fifth to go ahead 9-5. Sammi Caron is 3-for-5 with two runs and two RBI while Contreras is 3-for-4 with two runs and RBI of her own.

The teams will resume the game on Saturday morning at 11 a.m. in the top of the seventh as EOU will look for the late comeback. After the conclusion of game two, the team's will begin game three.
