EOU Falls in 2nd Doubleheader at No. 3 Southern Oregon

ASHLAND, Ore. – The Eastern Oregon softball team fell in the final two games of a four-game series at No. 3 Southern Oregon, losing 4-0 and 11-6 on Saturday in Cascade Collegiate Conference play.

Game 1 | No. 3 Southern Oregon 4, (RV) Eastern Oregon 0

The Mountaineers (2-12, 1-3 CCC) were held scoreless in their first game of the second double-header thanks to a strong pitching performance from Southern Oregon's Gabby Sandoval. Sandoval pitched a complete game, only giving up two hits and one walk to EOU in the shutout.

The two hits tallied by the Blue and Gold were during the first and the fourth innings. Senior Madison Barr hit a single up the middle in the first inning, and then during the fourth, senior Shevan DeFreitas singled to left field recording the only hits of the game for EOU.

Sophomore Amanda Smith made the start, allowing four earned runs in a complete game effort.

Game 2 | No. 3 Southern Oregon 11 vs. (RV) Eastern Oregon 6

In the second game of the doubleheader, the Mountaineers would fall into an 8-0 deficit in the first inning and 9-0 after the second inning.

In the second inning, senior Rayne Spencer sparked the Blue and Gold with a two-run home run to deep left field, cutting into the deficit making the score 9-2. Spencer led the team hitting 2-for-4 with three RBI's.

Southern Oregon would respond in the third, adding another run to their lead making the score 10-2.

As the fifth inning approached, Spencer continued to spark the offense with a triple to deep center field, scoring sophomore Madison Parker. In the next at bat, Barr hit into a fielder's choice, scoring Spencer off of a bad throw by the Raiders. A batter later, junior Jordan Henley singled to center field scoring Julie Hernandez. In the next at-bat, senior Hannah Rothwell singled to left, scoring freshman Brianna Zweygardt. The Mountaineers cut the deficit down to four runs at 10-6.

EOU was unable to continue the offense, however, falling short of the comeback to No. 3 SOU.

The Mountaineers improved in the second came, recording eight hits from seven different players. Barr went 1-for-4, DeFreitas went 1-for-3 with a walk, Henley went 1-for-4 with an RBI, Parker went 1-for-2 with a walk and two runs, and freshman Haley Ebner would finish 1-for-4 in the game. Junior Jessica Lambert pitched 5.1 innings, allowing four runs.

The Mountaineers will look to bounce back in their next series, continuing conference play against Corban on Friday, March 8 and Saturday, March 9, scheduled to be played in La Grande.
