EOU Rallies Back in Game 4 vs. UBC with 5-Run 7th

VANCOUVER, B.C. – The Eastern Oregon softball team ended the weekend splitting the series against the University of British Columbia, falling 5-1 in the first game before bouncing back with a 12-8 victory in the second.

GAME 1 | British Columbia 5, Eastern Oregon 1

The Mountaineers (4-18, 1-6 CCC) slipped in game one, falling 5-1 against British Columbia in the Cascade Collegiate Conference finale. EOU would score its first and only run of the game in the fourth inning. With runners on second and third, British Columbia threw a wild pitch, which allowed sophomore Julia Hernandez to score from third, who pinch ran for senior Shevan DeFreitas.

The top performers at the plate for the Blue and Gold were freshman Haley Ebner who finished 1-for-3, senior Shevan DeFreitas went 1-for-2 with a walk, and senior Sarah Bonner who went 1-for-1 during the contest.

British Columbia would hold EOU to only three hits, which allowed UBC to focus on the offensive end. The Thunderbirds scored five runs off of nine hits on the Mountaineers. Two runs came in the fourth inning and the final three runs were scored in the sixth, handing EOU a loss in the first game of the day.

Junior Jessica Lambert pitched well overall, allowing three earned runs in five innings, but was saddled with the loss in the low scoring game.

Game 2 | Eastern Oregon 12, British Columbia 8

In the second game of the day, the Mountaineers bats exploded by scoring a total of 12 runs on 16 hits in the comeback win over the Thunderbirds.

In the top of the seventh, and down 8-7, Eastern Oregon found a way to spark a big inning. With one out and the bases loaded, junior Jordan Shaw singled to center field, scoring freshman Shelby Starr and junior Jordan Henley, giving the Mountaineers the lead back 9-8. Understanding one run might not be enough, senior Rayne Spencer singled up the middle to score sophomore Madison Parker and junior Payton Pocklington, adding two more runs and making the score 11-8. To top off the big inning, Ebner came to the plate, singling up the middle and adding one more run, making the score 12-8.

Rayne Spencer opened the game in the first inning with a single to left field before stealing second base to get in scoring position. In the next at bat, senior Madison Barr singled up the middle, scoring Spencer from second to give EOU the first run of the game.

In the fourth inning, the Blue and Gold found their bats, scoring a total of four runs. Getting things started for the Mountaineers was Parker who drew a lead-off walk. Then came Spencer, who tripled to center field, scoring Parker from first. Spencer would go on to finish 3-for-5 with three RBIs. Two batters later, DeFreitas singled to the shortstop, scoring Spencer from third. In the same inning with the bases loaded, Bonner singled to right center, scoring senior Hannah Rothwell and DeFreitas. This would push EOU's lead to an early 5-0 score.

Bonner would finish 3-for-4 with 2 RBIs and DeFreitas finished 2-for-5 with one RBI.

In the bottom of the fourth, British Columbia responded by scoring four runs of their own, cutting the lead within one run.

The Mountaineers responded back in the fifth. With runners on first and second, Ebner single through the left side to score Barr. In the next at bat, Rothwell singled up the middle, scoring DeFreitas and pushing EOU's lead back to three at 7-4.

British Columbia refused to backing down, going on to score three runs in the bottom of the fourth, tying the game. Then in the bottom of the fifth, UBC went on to score one more run, giving them the lead. This set up the Mounties' eventual comeback in the seventh.

With help from senior pitcher Lauren Spencer, the Mountaineers would hold British Columbia to a scoreless seventh inning, forcing the series to a split. Spencer pitched the final 2.1 innings, allowing no runs, no hits, and two walks to earn her first win of the season.

Depending on weather and field conditions, the Mountaineers will look to host their first home series against Northwest University on Friday and Saturday at Peggy Anderson Field. Continue to check eousports.com for updates on next weekend's games.
